Disney’s Beauty And The Beast took its first bow in France yesterday, grossing $1.3 million ($1.8M including previews). The No. 1 start is the second best of 2017, behind only Fifty Shades Darker. It was more than double that of both Cinderella and Maleficent, and slightly down on the debut of The Jungle Book during Easter holidays last year.

The movie’s international box office through Wednesday is $244.3M for a global cume of $461.9M and on the way to $500M by week’s end.

The international haul Wednesday totaled $21.9M, representing 12% of the weekend. The Jungle Book’s first Wednesday last year repped 10% of its initial wide offshore frame.

BATB also opened No. 1 in Belgium on Wednesday with 70% of the market for the biggest bow of 2017. That’s more than double The Jungle Book and comes in ahead of the launches of Cinderella and Maleficent.

The biggest market yesterday was again China with $3.6M ($57.2M to date), followed by the UK with $2.8M ($32.1M to date). The UK Wednesday was on par with Tuesday with no visible sign that the attack at Westminster had an impact on box office.

Mexico is currently the No. 3 overseas hub for Belle and the gang at $17.6M ($1M Wed), followed by Brazil at $15.9M ($2.1M Wed) and Korea with $14.6M to date ($900K Wed) to round out the Top 5.

Spain saw a good bump on Wednesday with $1.2M for an $8.3M running cume, and Italy also scored seven figures with $1.1M to bring the total so far to $10.5M.

Australia moves into the castle today.

It should cross the billion dollar mark sometime next week, perhaps after the weekend, and the first movie of 2017 to do it.

Looking at Disney's release schedule for the rest of the year, my picks for other Disney films to break the billion mark include the new Pirates film, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Star Wars the last Jedi. Not sure about Coco, its got a November release and don't know enough it, but it is a Pixar movie with a cute little dog called Dante. Another long shot for the billion at the box office is Thor Ragnarok.

Four billion dollar plus grossing films in one year would equal Disney's result from 2016.

So here's their schedule:

Guardians of the Galaxy 2: April 28 (previous version made $773M)
Wish List: May 5
Pirates of the Caribbean : May 26 (previous movie made $1B)
Cars 3: July 14 (previous version made $562M)
Thor Ragnarok: November 3 (previous version made $644M)
Coco: November 22
Star Wars Last Jedi: December 15 (previous version made $2B)
Cruella: December 22

Disney, by far, is the most profitable Hollywood studio: they own Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar. It's a money-printing machine. This doesn't even include its theme parks and television properties.

In 2016 Disney's movie division generated $9.4 billion of its $55.6 billion in total revenue, and $2.7 billion of its $15.7 billion EBITDA. There are flow on revenues to its consumer products, media channels and parks/resorts divisions from the movie divisions IP.

Spider-man merchandise is an interesting case, although Sony owns the film rights Disney/Marvel owns the merchandise rights which they license to various toy manufacturers. In 2014 over $1.3 billion in Spider-man merchandise was sold (compared to $497 million for Batman and $277 million for Superman).

I have tickets purchased for GoG2 and intend on seeing Thor3, Last Jedi and Spider-man homecoming. Very little interests me enough to see at the cinema.

I am more optimistic about the Gurdians, Thor Ragnarok seems to have mixed elements from world war Hulk, not sure how that will pan out, Thor trailer looks awful too barring the led Zeppelin song in the background.

Watched Beauty and the beast, not that the movie was bad just not my genre, had to watch due to constant nagging from my girlfriend.

I realize that I cannot tell you what to like or not like, but the Thor Ragnarok trailer has generated a huge amount of positive buzz. The reactions from critics and fans alike are almost universal in their praise. It hit 163 million views in the first 24 hours, about 4 times as many as the Justice League trailer did in total. You're literally the only person I've seen out of thousands who has expressed this sentiment, but you are entitled to your own opinion.

I've been a marvel fan for over 35 years, and I still have my original issues of the mighty Thor from Walt Simonson's run in the 80's and is one of Marvels best story arcs ever. Most of the story-line for the movie is taken from these issues, hence the 80's theme (with some Planet Hulk mixed in). Hela looks like she stepped right out of the pages of the comics, so did Skurge the Executioner toting two m-16s (Thor issue 362).

James Gunn called it the best trailer Marvel has released. Comic book movie reviewer Grace Randolph (who has worked as a writer for both Marvel and DC) gave an extremely good review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJeTygjv5Mc.

Even Kevin Smith was blown away by the teaser trailer, I'd link his reaction vid but it has some colorful language.

Whether you liked it or not, it has achieved what a good teaser should and generated a huge amount of positive reaction and some impressive social media numbers. Box office analysts are already re-evaluating projections upwards for this film based on this trailer.
