‘Dhaka Attack’ topples Aamir Khan’s ‘Secret Superstar’ in NY
The show in the larger hall also sold out, prompting Kaufman Astoria to increase the number of shows to two screenings
Dipankar Dipon’s police action thriller “Dhaka Attack,” which has become a blockbuster in Bangladesh within a week of its release, is currently thriving on international screens.
After its soaring success in Bangladesh, the adrenaline-pumping film has even taken over B-town superstar Aamir Khan’s recently released “Secret Superstar” at a New York film theatre.
Kaufman Astoria Stadium, one of the Regal multiplex chain’s theatres in New York, had replaced Aamir Khan’s “Secret Superstar” to make way for the police thriller, to meet the demands of the huge crowd.
After the first screening of “Dhaka Attack” went houseful on October 20, the theatre authority moved Aamir Khan’s buzz-making film to a comparatively smaller theatre and replaced it with the Bangladeshi blockbuster.
On a surprising note, the show in the larger hall also sold out, prompting Kaufman Astoria to increase the number of shows to two screenings, confirmed Waliullah Sajib Saptak of Shapna Scarecrow, the international distributor for the movie.
Tagging the incident as a milestone for any Bangladeshi film in a foreign land, Saptak expressed his gratitude to the Bangali audience living in the city, saying he is looking forward to the day when Bangladeshi films will rule in the global film market.
“Dhaka Attack,” which is said to be the first police action thriller of Dhallywood, features a total 238 characters in the film. With Arifin Shuvo and Mahiya Mahi in the lead, “Dhaka Attack” boasts a heavyweight cast including Syed Hasan Imam, Alamgir, Afzal Hossain, Laila Hasan, ABM Suman, Shatabdi Wadud and Nawshaba, among others.
Shuvo plays a daredevil police with the bomb disposal unit, while Mahi dons the role of a journalist. After a long hiatus, Afzal Hossain is seen to return on to the silver screen with “Dhaka Attack,” playing the role of the Police Commissioner, while Shatabdi Wadud portrays another police high-up.
Since the film’s successful run in Bangladesh after its release on October 6, “Dhaka Attack” will also screen in three Middle Eastern countries, via Shapna Scarecrow’s international distribution.
