For the last several days Saharanpur is simmering as the rioters run amok vandalising property and indulging in arson. High profiled visits of Director General of Police (DGP) could not bring in calmness even as dozens were rounded up. Police personnel were attacked and vehicles set on fire.
But, it is not that only Saharanpur is burning, crime graph is up in several districts including capital Lucknow, where a daring dacoity in posh Gomti Nagar area took place. Suneeta Diwakar and her family were held at gun-point and intruders decamped with valuables.
Suneeta is still in a state of shock as she recalls her ordeal. The family members were tied-up and the dacoits looted cash and valuables. They even took along water bottles with them.
Earlier this week, another Lucknow resident Lal Bahadur lost his two daughters, who were murdered in broad day light while he was away attending his ailing wife in a hospital. While police was busy piecing together the sequence of events of the double murder case, a businessman in Para area of Lucknow as killed.
Uttar Pradesh has seen major reshuffle in police force since Yogi Adityanath took over as the Chief Minister of the state. Yogi Adityanath has said several times that criminals would be dealt with severely. But, his warning seems to have gone unheeded.
The states been witness to a sharp increase in crime graph since Yogi took over. Cases of dacoity rose from 16 in January to 23 in March and 33 in April. Cases of loot rose from 249 in January this year to 421 in March and 412 in April this year.
Number of murder rose from 286 in January to 396 in March and 399 in April this year. Cases of rape rose from 244 to 378 in March and 393 in April this year.
Talking to India today, Additional DGP of the state said that that every effort was on to control the crime graph. He said that graph was showing an upward trend because Burkina has stopped. He indicated that since illegal mining has completely been stopped so the instances of organised crime have shown a downward trend.
A yearly comparison of the crime statistics also shows an upward trend.
Till April this year, instances of dacoity were 91 as compared to 99 in 2015 and 77 in 2016. Loot cases stood at 1,352 till April this year as compared to 992 in 2015 and 1,186 in 2016. Murder cases stood at 1,364 till April as compared to 1,395 in 2015 and 1,513 in 2016.
Rape rose from 849 in 2015 to 1,030 in 2016 and 1,266 till April this year. Instances of riots have gone up from 1,608 in 2015 to 2,539 till April this year.
