Covid-19 Cases Soar to New Records in U.S.
Holiday reporting delays mean real infection rates are likely higher, officials say
Updated Jan. 3, 2022 4:49 pm ET

Covid-19 infections continued to soar far above previous peaks across the U.S., as students returned to classrooms while some workers remained home after contracting or being exposed to the virus.

The seven-day average of daily reported Covid-19 cases in the U.S. reached a pandemic record 403,385 on Sunday, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. The fresh peak arrived even as most states paused reporting during the New Year’s holiday weekend. Reporting delays will likely lead to spikes in reports of cases this week as states catch up. While Covid-19 tests remain in short supply in much of the U.S., Covid-19 testing was less robust last year, complicating comparisons between pandemic surges.

So what was the fucking point of getting the vax? I'm sure most of those positive cases are of people who are already vaccinated.

More than 100,000 people hospitalized with Covid-19 in US for first time in nearly four months

(CNN)More than 103,000 people are currently hospitalized with Covid-19, the first time the total has reached six figures in nearly four months, according to the latest data from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Covid-19 hospitalizations reached a record high of more than 142,000 about a year ago, on January 14, 2021, and last topped 100,000 on September 11. The total fell to about 45,000 hospitalizations in early November, but increased steadily since then, and surged in the last week. Just last Monday, HHS reported 71,000 Covid-19 hospitalizations.

States also are reporting surges in the number of children hospitalized. In Illinois, that number has almost tripled since the beginning of December, Gov. J. B. Pritzker said Monday. New Jersey Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said the total number of pediatric hospitalizations in that state has almost doubled in seven days.

Data published from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services last week showed that pediatric hospital admissions had reached a record high.

Even though much less effective now, vaccine still reduces infection risk.

Also, it drastically reduces the mortality rate and allow us to manage the disease as endemic.

Based on Singapore's numbers, the mortality rate for fully vaccinated getting infected by Delta is half of influenza. I believe the mortality rate for fully vaccinated getting infected by Omicron would also not be higher than influenza, or in fact lower, based on current numbers we see overseas.

So we have to take things in perspective and not just look at headline numbers reported by the media. Deaths attributed to pneumonia (including Covid) was actually lower for the past 2 years in SG despite the uptick in Covid deaths.

But that's provided you're vaccinated. The unvaccinated make up around 6% of Singapore eligible population but they make up around 70% of Covid deaths. I can see why some countries' healthcare systems are getting overwhelmed when they have like 15% or 20% of their eligible population not vaccinated.

You don't end up in the ICU.

Breakthrough case review finds 97% of COVID-19 cases in vaccinated individuals don't result in severe illness

correctly stated - it does help a huge deal.
fortunately this new macaroni is a good news in many cases that it frizzles out pretty quick.
