COAS wished Merry Christmas -General Qamar Javed Bajwa joined Christian community at Christ Church

Rawalpindi - December 25, 2017:
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa joined Christian community at Christ Church, Rawalpindi to take part in Christmas Celebrations. The congregation welcomed COAS and thanked him for sharing the festivity. COAS wished Merry Christmas to entire Christian community in Pakistan. He acknowledged role of Christian brethren not only towards creation of Pakistan but also for their contributions towards its progress. He appreciated role of various institutions in the fields of education, health and public welfare being managed by Christian community across Pakistan. He especially acknowledged their contributions in defence of motherland as part of Pakistan Armed Forces.

Commander Rawalpindi Corps was also present.

I think it is a positive thing to be part of the celebrations of our Christian community as they recently suffered a terrorist attack in Quetta rather I would say a high ranking military and civilian official should have joined their celebration at that Church in Quetta.

Finally, Pakistan is coming back on track where all minorities have equal rights to celebrate and practice their religion peacefully, and state is supporting them. one its peaceful and within state laws.

That is not true. For most of us who have been around in Pakistan have seen that the armed forces and bureaucracy have always maintained good ties with the minorities. Politicians too for the most part have dealt with minorities in an alright manner. Prior to 9/11, there were no militant attacks on a population that makes up less than 2% of the total. What has put Pakistan in a negative light is the militant attacks on minorities but lets keep in mind that the militants have not spared Sunnis and Shias either and this very important part of the overall narrative is left out in the media. For each minority, the majority has lost 10 to 20 more people since 2002.

As far as development goes, the minorities are not settled in one part of the country where the government has ignored development. Most of minorities are spread across urban and rural areas. The poor minorities have muslims neighbors who are just as poor etc. There are some minorities that have done exceptionally well (better than the national average).

So this charge of neglecting minorities for 65 years is not exactly accurate. If one were to say the neglect applied to the entire population for the past 65 years, it would be more accurate. In summary, no government in Pakistan has ever singled out minorities for ill treatment or neglect.

This is something positive that we should not shy away from recognizing. Yes their treatment is not like first world, but the majority also does not get first world like services or attention.

Most ulemas also accept that it is their right to practice their religion and they are to be respected and I think @blain2 has made a very balanced statement whole population has been neglected and the khariji terrorists attacked muslims, sunni, shia, ahmedi, christian, sufis etc etc etc
