LAHORE: The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Tuesday, reprimanded Director-General (DG) of Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Zahid Akhtar Zaman for uprooting a portion of the park for construction on former finance minister Ishaq Dar’s directions.
A three-member bench, headed by the CJP, began the hearing of the suo motu case of illegal road construction in Lahore.
The construction was of a road leading to Dar’s residence in Lahore. The CJP questioned the DG, “On whose authority was the road constructed?” At this, the DG replied saying, “Dar directed me over the phone. He requested that he needs parking space outside his house, and thus the road was to be constructed.”
Ashiyana scam: NAB arrests four more in housing project scam
“What kind of an officer are you?” the CJP questioned Zaman. “At the words of a minister, you uprooted and destroyed the park. You will have to pay for this, the court doesn’t care about people’s preferences,” the CJP remarked in utter disappointment.
“An inquiry into you from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) seems to be in order,” the CJP said, to which Zaman tendered his unconditional apology.
“The time for apologies is over,” the CJP then remarked. “Bring in all documents relating to the park, it’s complete ground area and other documents to court,” the CJP directed the DG.
The court then questioned how Zaman should be punished and informed him that he is in clear violation of Section 9 of the NAB rules. “Please don’t forward this to NAB, please forgive me,” the DG requested the court.
The CJP responded saying, “Everyone creates a scene when they’re sent to NAB, it’s your turn. Create the scene.”
Earlier this month, NAB arrested four more in the Ashiyana-i-Iqbal Housing Project scam.
The arrested were identified as Chief Engineer LDA Israr Saeed, applied economic specialist appointed in the Special Policy Unit (SPU), Bilal Qudwai, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Punjab Land Development Company (PLDC), Imtiaz Ahmad, and a member of the project’s technical and financial evaluation committee Arif Majeed Butt.
