China to set up manned space station around 2020
+ - 16:29, September 22, 2009

China's manned space program is at present in the first phase of the second step of the "three-step"strategic plan, said Wang Yongzhi, academic at the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and chief designer of China's manned space program, on September 21.

China has successfully carried out multi-manned and multi-day flight tests for the Shenzhou-VI spacecraft and extravehicular activities for the Shenzhou-VII spacecraft, and will conduct space rendezvous and docking tests, with preparations for the task about to enter the flight model phase. The implementation plans for follow-up projects such as China's manned space station are in the process of review and approval.

The CAE held a seminar on achievements made in China's engineering and technological fields on September 21, during which Wang made the above remarks in his "China's aerospace industry since the founding of New China”-themed speech.

He said that once the implementation plans for the manned space station program are approved, China will establish a permanent manned space station in orbit in just over a decade.

By then, Chinese people will not only be able to enter outer space, but will also be able to be stationed in space, therefore the manned space industry will undoubtedly bring increased benefits to China.

Wang noted that at present China's space industry has a complete system of research, design, production and testing and already ranks among the world's most advanced in many important fields of technology, such as manned space technology; satellite recovery; multi-satellite launch with a single rocket, cryogenic fuel and strap-on rocket technology; and the launch and monitoring of geo-stationary satellites.

In terms of carrier rockets, China has independently developed 15 various types of carrier rockets within the "Long March" series which have sufficient carrying capacity for any type of low, medium, high and earth synchronous orbits and basically fulfill the demands of any type of launch.

Since China announced its entrance into the international commercial satellite launch market in 1985, the country has sent over 30 overseas satellites into space and seized a share in the market.

At present, China has started developing a new generation of carrier rocket using cryogenic and pollution-free liquid propellant. A new series of rockets with more advanced technologies and improved carrying capacity will soon be developed.

In terms of artificial earth satellites, China has initially developed series of recoverable remote-sensing satellites, "Dongfanghong" telecommunications satellites, "Fengyun" meteorological satellites, "Shijian " scientific research and technological experiment satellites, "Ziyuan"earth resources satellites, "Beidou"navigation satellites and data relay satellites, amongst other types of satellites. China successfully conducted a lunar exploration project in 2007.

In terms of manned space, since implementing the manned space program in 1992, China has developed high reliability manned spaceships and carrier rockets, carried out engineering research on aerospace medicine and space life science, selected and trained the first group of astronauts, developed a batch of equipment for aerospace remote-sensing and aerospace scientific experiments, and already successfully launched four experimental unmanned spaceships and three manned spaceships, becoming the third country in the world capable of independently carrying out manned spaceflights.
