KARACHI: People’s Republic of China is going to be the largest importer of Pakistani products in the coming future, as Karakoram Highway (KKH) would be re-linked with Western China in 2012.

Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Chief Executive Tariq Iqbal Puri said in a meeting with Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) members that regional countries should be focused on enhancing Pakistani exports.

“Regional countries like Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Russia, Association of South East Asian Nation (ASEAN) countries and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are showing interest in Pakistani products,” he highlighted.

He said there is a huge potential and opportunity in China for Pakistani business.

He highlighted the participation of Pakistan in more than 12 exhibitions and four business forums in China that would be increased to 20 exhibitions in 2012.

Exploring different foreign markets for Pakistani products, he highlighted Russia for potatoes and cement, Japan for mango, etc.

He said TDAP is making intellectual contribution in promoting Pakistani products to foreign markets and KCCI should organise workshops and seminars to create awareness for the unexplored potential in these markets among the business community.

“Currently the European Union (EU) crisis are hitting Pakistani exports, that is why the exports are going down and the country is facing uncertainty. Now the markets should be diversified.”

He said textile sector contributes a huge portion in Pakistani exports but is showing decline at present due to low cotton prices, so the export of non-textile sector like Halal food manufacturing, cosmetics and many other products to these countries might help achieve export target for this year.

He suggested various measures to promote Pakistani products and brands in overseas markets and emphasised on web portals and video conferencing. “Contents in the web portal play a significant role in exploring the potential,” he added.

He also agreed to allocate Pakistan Pavilions to KCCI for several international exhibitions including TDAP’s WEXNET for woman entrepreneurs scheduled to be organised in Dubai soon.

KCCI President Mian Abrar Ahmad said the existing exports of Pakistan do not lie with the country’s export potential due to deteriorating law and order situation and negative perception of the country in foreign markets.

“Even Saudi Arabia has imposed restrictions on remittance to Pakistan,” he added.

He highlighted Halal food has a big market, even non-Muslim countries take interest in this sector. Also agriculture, engineering and value-added sector have much potential.

He said Pakistan has become an aid-dependant country chronically.

Former KCCI president Majyd Aziz highlighted the Turkish consul general witnessed mineral efficiency in Pakistan but feared in visiting such areas like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to negative perception of the country.

Good for Pakistan. But China will always maintain a big trade surplus with Pakistan and Pakistan will be nett importer.
If things were more normal, India could have been one of the biggest importer of Pakistani goods.

China is the second biggest consumer market in the world at the end of this year and its growth is in the good side of double digits annually for the rest of the decade. It won't take long before it'll the biggest market.

For Pakistan to catch that momentum she must have her industrial/manufacturing infrastructure and people skill ready. If an all weather rail link along the Karakorum Highway can be build in the future, the sky's the limit for the country.

One thing which China can't make and can be delivered through Pakistan or from Pakistan side is the
GAS and OIL

Which will only be possible if IRAN will going to lay pipelines to Pakistan and we along with Middle East investment will going to build more and more refineries to support the export of oil and gas to China....:pakistan::tup::pakistan:

Good! Pakistan’s exports to China rose from $576 million in 2006 to $1.154 billion in 2009-10. Now it is approx $2.12 billion. But Pakistan has still a long way to go considering that Pakistan's imports from China rose to $10 billion. The trade is heavily skewed in favor of China. And that's not a healthy sign.
