China, Egypt ink nuclear energy deal
Beijing: China and Egypt agreed to cooperate on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, in a development that could rile the US, a traditional Cairo ally.
The agreement was announced in a joint communique following talks in Beijing on Tuesday between Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.
ââ¬ÅEgypt is not going to produce nuclear weapons,ââ¬Â said He Wenping, an expert on Africa relations at the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the top government think tank.ââ¬ÅIt wonââ¬â¢t affect the international community, because Egypt will use the nuclear energy peacefully,ââ¬Â she said.
No details were immediately available on how the two nations planned to co-operate. The agreement comes at a time when both have announced plans to step up their nuclear energy capacity. China has an ambitious plan to increase its combined nuclear power capacity to 40,000 MW by 2020. Egypt is reviving its nuclear programmer two decades after it was frozen. AFP
