Chile may become the first South American nation to deploy a shipborne cruise missile with the capability to reach targets deep in land, as its navy is eyeing IAI/Malam’s Long Range Attack (LORA) hybrid missile and ballistic weapon, military sources in Santiago told Jane's .

Interest in LORA, with a 400 km range and GPS guidance, increased after successful test launches with the system’s operational land version were performed on last June from a commercial ship.

Plans envision the missile’s initial deployment during the first half of the 2020s, the sources added.

The decision to have a shipborne long-range attack capability was made in the early 2000s, the sources noted, and since then the Chilean Navy’s Directorate of Programs, Research, and Development has been working to define requirements and identify potential solutions.

The LORA is a Long Range Artillery Weapon System capable of engaging strategic targets deep in the enemy's territory from mobile or maritime platforms. Typical targets are fixed or transportable including infrastructure assets.
