HYDERABAD: Traditionally dominated political culture in Sindh is seen changing speedily, as Makhdooms of Hala are, for the first time, facing a stronger Matiari Awami Ittehad in their family constituencies, Matiari district.
Even once the reliable followers of major spiritual capital of Sindh, Hala New, have started showing strength to use against the PPP leaders, by staging rallies, arranging corner meetings and mobilising people long before the announcement of election schedule.
It shows they (Makhdooms) have lost their grip and their potential supporters are joining electoral alliances against them. The alliance members have one-point agenda to stop their rivals (Makhdooms) from entering the power corridors.
Hala New is said to be PPPs stronghold and partys founding place. Makhdoom Talibul Maula, father of Makhdoom Ameen Fahim, always defeated his rival PML-F supported candidate late Zulfiqar Ali Shah Jamot, father of Muhammed Ali Shah Jamot, who now is leading the alliance.
The Makhdooms faced setback first when Muhammed Ali Shah Jamot was elected District Nazim when Matiari was formed new district. Since then Jamots strategically strengthened relationship with the people, while Makhdooms even neglected their own supporters at every level.
It is obvious that earlier only Jamots of the PML-F challenged the PPP-backed Makhdooms of Hala in general elections. But it is the first time that there is stronger alliance, in which most influential families are with Jamots against the PPP.
Those keeping close eye over the changing scenario say that some of the landlords are parting their ways, because they are demanding share in the power from Makhdooms, and, in case of refusal, they want to nominate their own successors.
In this regard, PPP supporters say that Makhdooms do not have space to accommodate all the people, because there is a large number of such landlords, who are expecting to get something in shape of jobs and uplift schemes. They have justifications that such alliances could not put any dent in the Makhdooms stronghold.
However, it was common understanding that all the affairs of Makhdoom House Hala are being run by servants, instead of Makhdooms themselves or any sensible person.
This is also the reason these landlords are criticising PPP leaders in public gatherings, being organised in villages and smaller towns. Such gatherings itself is unusual trend in traditional political culture.
Now it depends on Makhdooms whether they give it serious consideration to initiate dialogue with their supporters or letting these dissidents show their political strength. In fact, Makhdooms are more powerful, enjoying widely support with a large number of followers of Sarwari Jamat but this time they may face tougher situation in the electoral politics.
Shah Muhammad Shah, leader of Sindh United Party (SUP), who belongs to Matiari district and is member of the alliance, was optimistic for future, saying everybody can contest elections. If these people change their loyalties from Makhdooms and join hands with the PML-F and SUP, they are welcome.
Shah said actually it is the local alliance of major parties - PML-F and SUP - with locally influential people, who have said goodbye to their previous allies, Makhdooms.Yes these people were trustworthy for Makhdooms, who never imagined seeing such people coming against them. But it happens and we see the situation is changing, he said.
Local people have more to say against Makhdoom Jameel Zaman, who allegedly ignored their loyal people and preferred to stay distantly. He never allowed these people to see him during the entire period of the present government.
It was quite strange approach we never experienced in the past, said a conscious voter of Makhdooms in Hala.
Not a single person from such follower families got job, like they always used to get in previous PPP-led governments. Similarly, there is no such development work initiated by Makhdooms from their MNA and MPA funds. This approach has annoyed these people who have come to show their resentment.
Hala, the town of artisans, educationists and poets, has a century old culture, where Makhdoom Talibul Maula always promoted the literary, poetic gatherings and organised music programmes.
Increasing crime, including highway robberies, motorbike snatching and kidnapping for ransom in the neighbourhood is also being linked to the prolonged absence of Makhdooms from their stronghold. Traders, professionals and small scale landlords are being targeted by criminals.
All the roads, leading to Hala have become unsafe, as criminals are on rampage. Despite this lawlessness, Makhdooms have never taken notice to curb it effectively and ensure safety to life and property of citizens, who have been their loyal voters since generations.Despite several attempts to get opinion, Makhdoom Jameel Zaman could not respond.
