Cabinet nods river protection act draft | Bangladesh | bdnews24.com
Dhaka, Jan 7 (bdnews24.com) The Cabinet on Monday gave final clearance to the draft of the National River Protection Commission Act 2013 with a view to protecting the country's rivers.
Over 400 rivers and their tributaries run across Bangladesh, also known as the Land of Rivers. But many of its rivers are dying out due to reckless encroachments and pollution.
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan informed journalists that a chairman and four experts on river, environment, river survey and law (human rights) would be appointed under the act for a three-year term.
The Act will help prevent building infrastructures by encroaching rivers through a National River Protection Commission.
As per the Act, the Commission will work for creating public awareness for protecting rivers, conducting researches on river protection, ensuring river management, and taking up both short- and long-term plans for protection of rivers.
On July 3, the Cabinet had given preliminary nod to the Act draft.
