BYD Delivers First Pure Electric Bus Fleet in Ecuador

2019-03-14

In a ceremony held on March 12, BYD celebrated the delivery of 20 battery-electric buses to integrate Ecuador's first electric bus fleet in Guayaquil, the country's largest city. This follows BYD's first delivery of an electric vehicle fleet to Ecuador in April 2017, when the company introduced the country's first pure taxi fleet.

The event was attended by the mayor of Guayaquil, Mr. Jaime Nebot, when he announced that the state will pay for 50% of the energy costs during the first year of operation of both electric taxi and bus operators. In addition, the government will provide a bonus between USD 2,000 to 3,000 for every electric taxi driver.

Mayor Nebot continued by stating that the purchase of electric buses is a good example of the city's development model guideline to integrate "central and local administrations, domestic and overseas companies, and citizens." The ceremony was also attended by the city's senior government officials, who highlighted the importance of the cooperation that made it possible to introduce electric mobility to Ecuador's main port.

The electric bus fleet will be operated by Saucinc, a Guayaquil bus operator. Prior to the delivery, a trial operation was carried out with a bus running a daily average of 250km in Guayaquil from November 2017 to March 2018, during which over 72,000 passengers could experience an electric bus service for the first time. The bus fleet service operation is expected to eliminate 12.8 tons of CO2 emissions and the consumption of 2.9 million gallons of diesel, representing a cut of USD 8 million in costs for the Ecuadorian government, which currently subsidizes fossil fuel for public transportation. BYD's advanced technologies will provide bus drivers with a comfortable drive and increased road safety, with features such as speed limit control via software, and indoor cameras.

José Silva, General manager of Saucinc, thanked the Municipal Transit Authority (MTA) for "setting clear standards and allowing this technological leap from consuming fossil fuels to clean energy in Ecuador," in addition to highlighting BYD's support for the design, implementation and after sales. Silva added that the main beneficiaries will be the residents of Guayaquil, who can now enjoy top technology in their own city; as well as the Saucinc drivers, whose work will now become much safer and more comfortable.

Nice, Chinese made vehicles are getting more and more customers.

Sorry. Oil price is dropping. You can spread your nonsense but fact is oil days are over. :enjoy:

We'll see how expensive electricity gets when everyone is hooked on it. They'll shut down power plants, jack up electricity price, and make your wallets empty.

You can harvest your own electricity with solar panel or even setup a mini windmill on top of your home roof to support some of your electric appliances. But u can't with petrol.

You can but why would you? Wind and solar have very low energy output.

March 13 (UPI) -- Chinese electric bus maker BYD delivered a fleet that started rolling this week in Ecuador's second biggest city of Guayaquil, and it may soon send another to the capital Quito, as the vehicle maker adds another country to its fast regional expansion for electric vehicles.

On Tuesday, a fleet of 20 all electric buses, which charge a 35-cent fare per passenger, started to cover a route connecting north and central Guayaquil, making it the second Latin American city with this type of service already in place, El Universo newspaper reported.

Mayor Jaime Nebot said the city will soon move with promoting electric taxis.

According to Bus World, BYD in December delivered 100 electric buses to Santiago, and in January announced it won a bid for 64 electric buses for the city of Medellin, in Colombia. The buses, with 80-passenger capacity, will arrive in the second half of this year.

According to BYD, tests showed a BYD K11 electric articulated bus that Medellin bought in 2017 results in lower refueling and maintenance costs compared with diesel vehicles.

There are other Latin American cities that plan to add electric buses to their mass transportation services, including Buenos Aires, San Jose, Costa Rica and Panama City.

A Deutsche Welle report, said that Cali, Colombia, will add electric buses that have "regenerative" brakes that help to recharge batteries while breaking.

A pilot project in Costa Rica is also planned to include three electric buses running between cities, and a one-year pilot program in Argentina will put eight electric buses on the road.

China is one of the world leaders in the use of electric buses. A 2018 study estimated there are 385,000 electric buses in use around the world, with roughly 99 percent of them in China. In the United States, there are about 1,600 buses running on electricity.

BYD announced in January it has produced 50,000 electric buses, just nine years after production started. The unit was a 12-meter pure electric bus for Spain. BYD says it is the only company that has successfully entered the Spanish electric bus market.

BYD is a vehicle manufacturer in the Shaanxi province in north central China. It makes autos, buses, electric bicycles, trucks, forklifts and rechargeable batteries.
