ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
Creating a buffer zone on the Iraqi side of the border would decrease casualties by helping keep terrorists out of Turkey, the main opposition leader has said, adding that the idea should receive U.S. support.
What is there to deny? We want to create a buffer zone in a flat area. We do not want this land; we will withdraw as soon as the terror is over. There shouldnt be any problems, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the head of the Republican Peoples Party, or CHP, told daily Cumhuriyet in an interview published Wednesday
We would convince the United States on this matter if the CHP is voted into power, Kılıçdaroğlu, noting that former party leader Deniz Baykal had previously suggested the idea of a buffer zone before the United States entered Iraq.
It was a very consistent political approach, but it didnt happen. It would have been useful because you could have taken security measures more safely and much more economically, the CHP chief said. The ruling party is now considering this, and this time they have to convince the United States.
New anti-terror measures are being considered in the wake of increasing attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, which is listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
Noting this, Kılıçdaroğlu said: If [the PKK] is being called an enemy to Turkey and the United States, then we say the United States should not deny a reasonable and sensible suggestion to prevent terror.
Seeking consensus
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who went on a short holiday Wednesday, said Tuesday that he would likely offer an invitation next week to opposition party leaders to discuss anti-terror measures.
In the event of such a meeting, Kılıçdaroğlu said, the CHP would ask Erdoğan to seek consensus on anti-terrorism measures.
First of all, we want a national consensus. The economic, social, psychological and cultural dimensions of the issue should all be taken into consideration, Kılıçdaroğlu told daily Cumhuriyet. If you dont see the economic dimension of terror, if you try to solve it with just guns, you wont get any results.
The vagueness of government projects being called initiatives has created division within the country, the CHP chief added.
Asked about his recent comment that blood cannot be cleaned with blood, Kılıçdaroğlu said: What I was trying to say was that you cant solve terror on the security front alone. The fight against terror has different dimensions, including economic, social, psychological and cultural aspects.
The CHP leader also said terrorist groups receive significant support from outside Turkey and called reliance on foreign intelligence a key weakness in the fight against terror.
Kılıçdaroğlu and CHP General-Secretary Önder Sav are expected to visit the site of a deadly PKK attack in Gediktepe on Friday, accompanied by Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ.
Başbuğ and Erdoğan had visited Gediktepe two days after an attack and crouched with soldiers. Pictures taken of Erdoğan, Başbuğ and other commanders crouching while visiting military positions in the region following the deadly attack were criticized by some columnists, who said the government has kneeled before terror. The same criticism was also made by the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP.

This makes the most sense. If we set up forward operations it would cut off the PKK not only that it would improve our incursions into Iraq in pursuit of these Terrorists. I really hope Kılıçdaroğlu and the CHP come into power.
