British government raises its terrorism threat to "severe" - People's Daily Online January 23, 2010

British government on Friday raised its terrorism threat level to "severe" from "substantial", suggesting an terrorist attack is "highly likely".

UK Secretary of State for the Home Department Alan Johnson said: "The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) has today raised the threat to the UK from international terrorism from substantial to severe."

"This means that a terrorist attack is highly likely, but I should stress that there is no intelligence to suggest than an attack is imminent," he said in a television statement.

"JTAC keeps the threat level under constant review and makes its judgments based on a broad range of factors, including the intent and capabilities of international terrorist groups in the UK and overseas," the statement said.

British government raised the terrorism threat level days before it hosts an international conference on Afghanistan on Jan. 28 and small scale international meeting on Yemen on Jan. 27.

There are five levels of terrorism threat in Britain -- critical, severe, substantial, moderate and low. The UK threat level has remained at "substantial" since late July of 2009.
