NEW DELHI, Jul 18, 2009 (Hindustan Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- India is likely to be among the top three markets with highest number of mobile Internet users in less than two years, according to the thinking in Internet search giant Google Inc.
Affordable smartphones, cheaper telecom data plans and applications customised for Indian users have helped India's mobile Internet users to double to 2 crore over the past year, aided by handsets as cheap as Rs. 6,000, said Vinay Goel, country head, products at Google India.
"With the launch of 3G services enabling better bandwidth, India could be among the top three countries with maximum mobile Web users by end of next year, ahead of US and Japan," Goel.
The country is already among the top 10 markets in the world behind countries like China, United States, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom and France.
"When I came to India two years back, I thought none of the applications Google has invested in will work in the country," said Goel.
The company is gradually making a shift to web-based applications like voice search, maps and social networking, in which Google-owned Orkut has a strong presence in India.
