Israel launches Gaza Strip air strikes

Israel has launched air strikes at targets in the Gaza Strip, reports say.

Palestinian witnesses reported several explosions in Gaza City, but there were no immediate details of injuries or structural damage, Reuters reported.

The strikes came after a rocket fired from the coastal enclave by militants earlier on Friday hit the Israeli city of Ashkelon on the Mediterranean coast.

That attack caused no casualties but damaged a building and cars in the city, 12km (7 miles) north of Gaza.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. The Israeli military had no immediate comment. Earlier on Friday, Palestinian militants in Gaza fired a rocket into Ashkelon on Israel's Mediterranean coast, causing damage but no injuries.

Gaza City (CNN) -- Israeli jets launched eight air strikes early Friday on Gaza, Palestinian officials said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that two weapons factories were hit, one in northern Gaza and the other in central Gaza, as were two weapons depots in southern Gaza.

The strikes were carried out in retaliation against the recent firing of makeshift Qassam rockets from Gaza into Israel, an IDF spokesman said.

"The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm the citizens of Israel and will continue to operate firmly against anyone who uses terror against it," the IDF statement said.

"The IDF holds Hamas as solely responsible for maintaining peace and quiet in the Gaza Strip."

On Thursday, Israel dropped leaflets over Gaza warning residents of a possible strike.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz, citing the IDF, said the strikes were Israeli's initial response to an operation in Khan Younis that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded two others.

Three of Friday's strikes occurred in Khan Younis, one occurred east of Rafah, one on a cheese factory in Gaza City and one northwest of Beit Lahia, which is northwest of Gaza, Palestinian officials said.

Other strikes were on the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza, on a resistance training camp and on a Hamas outpost, they said.

Israeli jets strike Gaza

Israel has launched air attacks against targets in the Gaza Strip, injuring eight Palestinians, medical sources have said.

Sami Zyara, a Palestinian journalist in the Gaza Strip, told Al Jazeera that two rockets launched on Friday targeted a police training centre run by Hamas.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment.

Earlier on Friday, Palestinian fighters launched a rocket into the city of Ashkelon on Israel's Mediterranean coast, causing some damage but no injuries.

"This attack came after rockets were fired at Ashkelon," Zyara said.

He said that injuries were less than they could have been, given the crowded area that was hit, because Palestinians expected that "Israel would retaliate" for the attack on Askkelon.

"None of the Palestinian groups declared responsibility for that attack," he said.
