The Brazilian Navy will commission the French Foudre-class FS Siroco (L 9012) landing platform dock (LPD) by 31 December, the service told IHS Jane's on 18 November.

The exact date for commissioning is yet to be finalised, the service added, but necessary documentation for the ship's transfer of property is expected to be signed by 31 December.

A Brazilian crew is being trained on the ship's operation by French Navy personnel, the Brazilian Navy said. French DCI-NAVFCO - which specialises in naval training, assistance, and expertise - has delivered language translation during the last month or so for that training, the company told IHS Jane's on 18 November.

The Brazilian Navy Directorate of Naval Engineering was authorised to procure the ship for around EUR80 million (USD85 million). It is to be renamed Bahia (G 40) and designated as NDM (Navio Doca Multipropósito). The navy will also receive three landing boats.

The package Brazil purchased includes original armament comprising two MBDA SIMBAD twin launchers for MBDA MISTRAL very short range air-defence missiles, spares, special tools, test equipment, training, and technical publications. The ship will be based in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil announced in September 2015 the establishment of a Monitoring and Support Group and a Delivery Group to assist the vessel's transfer process.

A spokesperson for French shipbuilder DCNS declined to provide any information about whether or not the company is involved in the transfer of FS Siroco to Brazil. However, the Brazilian Navy told IHS Jane's that if efforts to increase the ship's availability are executed in Brazil after it is commissioned, the navy would likely seek to utilise DCNS' knowledge as a traditional maintainer of French Navy vessels.

France has its own engine for their navy ships? I know that they almost produce everything, but as UAE choose German engine on Leclerc, I got interested about their diesel engine capabilities.. ?
