MIRANSHAH: A bomb attack killed seven Pakistani soldiers and wounded 12 others on Tuesday in near Miranshah on the Afghan border, local officials said.
The bomb struck on a road under construction, five kilometres north of Miranshah, the main town of the district of North Waziristan, known as a strong bastion of Taliban and al Qaeda linked militants.
“An improvised explosive device planted along the roadside went off near a military truck, killing seven soldiers and wounding 12 others,” a local intelligence official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
He said that the soldiers were providing security to workers building the road between Miranshah and the area of Ghulam Ali.
Another intelligence official confirmed the attack and casualties.
Pakistan goes to the polls in a general election on May 11 but there are fears that violence will impact voter turnout in the northwestern tribal belt.
Pakistani troops have been fighting for years against homegrown insurgents in the area, where the United States has accused them of not doing enough to crack down on Taliban and other militants active in Afghanistan.
Washington considers the tribal belt the main hub of Taliban and al Qaeda militants plotting attacks on the West and in Afghanistan.
Pakistan says more than 35,000 people have been killed as a result of terrorism in the country since the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

First and foremost, we send our deepest condolences go to the friends and families of the brave soldiers who got killed in this cruel act of terror. We also wish a quick and speedy recovery to those who are injured. Our nations continue to pay the highest price in fighting terrorism. At the same time, the nation of Pakistan has been plagued with terrorism in recent times. We regularly see terrorist organizations like the TTP claim responsibility for these deadly attacks. They’ve left very little to ponder regarding their evil motives. Yet, we continue to fall victim to conspiracy theories, and many of us fail to separate facts from fiction. At the moment, it is obvious that these terrorists are focused on trying to create frenzy and send the nation into turmoil before the general elections in May. We encourage the Pakistani forces to remain vigilant against these enemies of the nation. We hope to build on our improving relationship and assist Pakistan in negating the threat posed by these terrorist organizations. We restate what Richard Hoagland, the charge d ’affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, said not long ago: “In this dangerous world where terrorists can strike at any moment, we must all work together – Pakistanis and Americans alike – because we have a strong mutual interest in defeating terrorism.”

MIRANSHAH: Nine soldiers were killed and eight others injured in a suicide attack on a military vehicle and nearby roadside checkpoint in the Saidgai area of North Waziristan Agency on Tuesday.

Government officials said a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden double-cabin pickup truck into a military vehicle carrying soldiers to the Pak-Afghan border area of Ghulam Khan.

They said nine Pakistan Army soldiers died on the spot while eight others sustained serious injuries. The injured soldiers were later shifted to a military hospital in the Miranshah army camp.

There were also reports that some of the injured were in critical condition and had been shifted to the military hospitals in Bannu and Peshawar.Official sources said the military truck was passing through a roadside checkpoint manned by the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) when it came under attack from the suicide bomber.

Saidgai village is about 15 kilometres northwest of Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan, and is close to the Afghan border.It was the second suicide attack in two months in North Waziristan where the Taliban and the government signed a peace accord and promised not to attack each other.

The local administration announced a curfew in the entire tribal region after the suicide attack on the security convoy and closed all shops and markets in Miranshah and other areas of the restive tribal region.Two Pakistan Army gunship helicopters flew over the tribal region after the attack on security forces but did not carry out any strafing.

But PA does need to evolve their warring techniques in these areas...more than half of the population are mentally challenged and these types of attacks are expected in these medieval tribal areas...

Well, I have been away for last few weeks so havent been around.. But I have hardly seen any established Indian members (not counting suicide troll ids), really celebrating the Pakistani deaths (not counting terrorists/militants killed in Kashmir). Can not say the same for other way round though
