LAHORE - Pakistan is spending almost 20 per cent of its foreign exchange on fossil fuels imports. Annually $7 billion is being eaten away in import of conventional energy resources that is equivalent to 40 per cent of total imports by the country, but the country still lacks far behind in tapping the vast potential of alternate energy resources.

3000MW power potential in sugar industry
A research conducted by the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, suggests that the country’s energy demand is expected to increase three fold by 2050, but supply position is not inspiring in anyway. It indicates that Pakistan has almost 3,000 MW power generation potential in sugar industry through biogas, but it is hardly producing some 700MW. Study points out that the renewable and sustainable energy resources are the best substitute to the conventional fuels and energy sources. It estimates that Pakistan has almost 159 million animals that produce almost 652 million kilogram of manure daily from cattle and buffalo only, which can be used to generate 16.3 million-cubic-meters biogas per day and 21 million tonnes of bio fertiliser per year. It can easily compensate around 20 per cent of nitrogen and 66 per cent of phosphorus requirement in the crop fields, the study estimates.

Actually.. with proper planning all crisis can be solved.

Our govt. ministers and bureaucracy earn when Pakistan spend.

Otherwise only stupid will allow import of uncertified and unefficient products.

Where as in Pakistan son of Gilani and Shabaz Sharif are in race for profiting most out of energy crisis.

these project can be initiated by individuals as well as by SME's

I know but program initiated at individual level will be more of nuisance.

The villages had to be planned this way... that all crap and green waste is collected and dumped in right place.

There shall be a space for such dump and there for houses needed to be designed accordingly.

It does not mean that it is a no go.

Although sugar mills can play bigger role and can surplus more energy by increasing the efficiency of power houses and conserving energy in production of sugar.

yes you are right. Currently most people turn manure in to Pathi or manure cakes for burning purpose which destroy the potential fertilizer obtained after extracting bio gas / methane.

Biogas is a cheaper way to get rid off energy crises but it requires a lot of planning

Only viable use of biogas is its burning on domestic scale, don't have expectations of running steam turbines.

Not only animal waste also human waste end up in ponds, which even lead to health problems.
By turning to bio gas govt. can same much more in health expenses but the corrupt and inept govt. get profited by spending money and self reliance is not what IMF wish.

Also, Human biogas is much more potent than the Bovine variety.
And the potential for tapping it via the sewerage system is there.

My teacher is doing a project with Punjab government. They will produce biogas from the waste collected from a newly built slaughter house. Thousands of animal will be slaughtered everyday and the waste collected from intestines will be used

( cant find the details of the project, will share with you once i go to uni on Monday)

thar coal gasification never took off...
jamshoro in sindh..shangla par in KPH and many other places in the coutry have year round strong winds due to geology of the area...and very suitable for inland wind turbines on large scale..then the shores of baluchistan are suitable for a large dam where seawater can be stored via pumps driven directly by wind turbines...pumped storage dam..with no shortage of wing or water...
and many other ways...if making electricity/.

but who will do it?

Huh.. some stupid professor sold it to the government. Why do you want to use animal bi product like intestine to bi gas??? You can use them as animal and fish feed and is very lucrative.
