Benazir Bhutto Democracy Award for Suu Kyi
Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has become the first recipient of the new Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Award for Democracy presented by a committee set up by the ruling party in Pakistan.
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi received the award for her life-long commitment to democracy and welfare of the people, according to a statement quoted by Pakistan's The News International newspaper on Tuesday.
The adjudicating committee was appointed by the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPT) in memory of Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister of Pakistan who was assassinated in December 2007.
Bhutto was Pakistan's first and to date only female premier. Benazir Bhutto had become the first female Prime Minister of an Islamic country, and like Suu Kyi, had inherited a political legacy from her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was assassinated in 1979.
The committee is headed by Bhutto's husband, the current Pakistani President, Asif Ali Zardari, and PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. It has founded Benazir Bhutto Shaheed awards in the fields of democracy, human rights, women's empowerment and social services.
Pakistan had maintained a close relationship with the Burmese military regime until Pakistan's former leader, Gen Pervez Musharraf lost power in 2008.
