Beijing MAC builds three-dimensional military transportation system
( Source: PLA Daily ) 2010-June-2 16:52

In recent years, the military transportation department of the Beijing Military Area Command (MAC) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army has been actively exploring ways to push forward military-civilian integrated development in building three-dimensional military transportation system. In result, it has realized breakthrough in organic emergency projection capability, steady enhancement of diversified transportation support capability, basically forming a military-civilian integrated military transportation support model.

Currently, in the construction of major infrastructures including core airports, ports and wharves, expressways and trunk railways within the scope of the theatre, all transportation departments must give priority to the needs of national defense and combat and terminals must be reserved for emergency use by the troops. Before the construction of major projects, it is a must to have argument on national defense, so as to ensure the reinforcement of the construction of the military transportation facilities and the improvement of the quick loading and unloading support capability.

When it came to the achievements of military-civilian integration, Dong Hua, director of the Military Transportation Department of the Beijing Theatre, said excitedly, “Within the limits of jurisdiction of the theater, the expressways extending in all directions can be changed into runways in a twinkle, the continuous and unbroken tunnels and mountain path can serve as important places for stationing troops after minor transformation, the railway platforms and shipping wharves can be quickly transformed into field platforms and field wharves available for troops’ use at any time”.

Quite an important development and augmentation for the country's defense capabilities

helicopters are not a strategic weapon. just build more nukes, missiles, fighters and tanks and focus research on those areas, our resources are limited. as long as the helicopters can be used they don't need to be top of the line.

never said they were strategic, but at least in terms of disaster relief they would be very useful considering the sorry state of transportation in the farther/poorer western regions and the fact that earthquakes and the like destroy existing infrastructure. and previous experiences show that we need more.
