Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has come down hard on Indian batsmen's inability to counter the short-pitched bowling from England.

Most batters were casualties of the bouncing ball as India slumped to a humiliating 319-run defeat here at Trent Bridge yesterday.

"If India don't try to improve their batting against short-pitched bowling, they will have similar problems in the latter half of the series," a furious Gavaskar told MiD DAY.

Gavaskar said that there is a technical deficiency in the batsmen's approach towards short-pitched bowling. "If you look at the dismissals of some of the platers, the root cause of the problem is that most of them are trying to fend the short ball instead of trying to keep it down. The basic idea is to always try to keep the ball down. With this sort of technique, they are going to continue to suffer," said the batting legend.

Ok Sunil you think you can criticise Sachin, Rahul and Laxman? How have they managed to be the leading run scorers in world cricket? Granted their may be an issue but do this publically isnt helping the side. Of course you never had problems with the short ball did you?

Well Botham said that Indians played like 'the Banglas'!

A lousy display is, after all, a lousy display.

If you run after money and have no rest, then what result that is different from this, can you expect?

The BCCI is the villain of the piece and not the players alone.

I agree but i think a quiet word or speaking to the individuals who he believes need to change their approach. On the whole its a difficult tour and public criticism doesn't help guys that already know there is an issue.

Agreed. They tried to rest players in the windies and came to the UK 6 days before the 1st test. They look tired and lets be honest its not just technique its not looking after the players. I think the strategy of bombarding the players such a busy schedual will have long term adverse affects

Think he is criticising everyone else but these three. Rahul is probably among the best players of short pitched bowling in the world but several of the younger players are like a cat on a hot tin roof against the short stuff. Gavaskar probably has a right to criticise, he played some of the greatest fast bowlers without a helmet; these guys seem to be afraid against much less fearsome bowling even when wearing more armour than a gladiator.
