u mean pakistan is still not a member of WTO, surprising......considering that it was an ally of US which aggressively pushed for WTO.

yes i guess... Pakistan in WTO would have hurt Bangladesh's textile industry so it was logical and understandable move....

Lets see how valuable this vote would be... if more nations didn't object.. i guess objection of one or two nations shouldn't be a great concern?

I think--one nation objection is enough to block the deal

Surprisingly, India voted in favour of Pakistan and Bangladesh opposed.

Each country looks after her own interest. Bangladeshis must have calculated their loss will be far more than the good relation with pakistan can bring to them.

In case of India, it is part of ongoing give-and-take scheme.

Bangladesh blocks EU package for Pakistan at WTO | The News Tribe

Brussels: Bangladesh blocked the European Union’s trade package for Pakistan at the World Trade Organization, a local television channel reported on Tuesday.
The channel said that Bangladesh had promised to Pakistan that it would not oppose the package.
India, which recently promised to support the package for Pakistan in response to Pakistan’s assurance for giving it the status of most favoured nation, voted in favour. India had earlier voted against the package.
If the package had been passed, it would have boosted Pakistan’s exports to the EU by 100 million euros.
The EU last year offered to allow import of 75 Pakistani items on a lower duty to help Pakistan cope with the floods of July-August 2010. The package must get a WTO nod to come into effect

I think India should not couple the two. Pakistan will be at a loss if it cannot expose its companies to competition and in the international stage protectionism dies fast.
Pakistan politics is oriented completely towards domestic posturing and deals such as MFN will be opposed by one lobby or the other.

I salute the Bangladeshis who were intent on looking after their own interests unlike our puppet MMS who forsake the opposition even though it will have a huge impact on the Indian garment industry.

Well done Bangladeshis
