Automotive Testing and R&D Centres
In the “Make in India” workshop held on 29th December 2014, Department of Heavy Industry has undertaken to come out with a National Capital Goods Policy which also includes Machine Tools. Accordingly a draft base paper for the same has been prepared.
National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP)project was approved by Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in July 2005. Under the project several automotive testing and R &D Centres have been set up as under :-
(i) International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), Maneser:- A full-fledged testing and homologation centre within the northern hub of automotive industry. The Centre has facilities like Pedestrian Safety Lab, Mileage Accumulation Chassis Dyno (MACD), Shield Housing Evaporative Determination (SHED), and Vehicle Test Cell (VTC).
(ii) National Automotive Test Tracks (NATRAX), Indore: - World –class Proving Grounds or testing tracks on around 4,000 acres of land including summer and winter pads. The Centre has facilities like Vehicle dynamic labs including Kinematics and compliance Rig and component development and rigs, CAD/ CAE labs, and power train lab.
(iii) Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), Ahmednagar:-The Centre has facilities like Electromagnetic Compatibility Facility and test tracks comprising of antilock braking system track.
(iv) Automotive Research Association of India(ARAI), Pune :- Testing and Homologation Facility. The Centre has a Passive Safety Lab and two other labs i.e. Fatigue Lab and Power Train Lab are being developed.
(v) National Institute for Automotive Inspection, Maintenance and Training (NIAIMT), Silchar: - National specialised Hill Area Driving Training Centre. The Centre has facilities like Mechanics Training Institute (MTI), Driving Training Institute (DTI),Inspection Maintenance Station (IMS).
(vi) National Center For Vehicle Research & Safety (NCVRS), Rae-Bareli:- The Centre has facilities like Accident Data Analysis Center and Testing of Tractors and Off Road Vehicle.
(vii) Global Automotive Research Center (GARC), Chennai:-A full-fledged testing and homologation Centre with the southern hub of automotive industry having facilities like Infotronics Lab, Pedestrian safety lab, Air bag lab. Facilities like Power train Lab, Fatigue Lab, Homologation Tracks are being developed.
The revival plans already approved for various CPSEs, inter alia, include an element of locating Joint Ventures. However, so far only limited success has been achieved in establishing Joint Ventures.
This information was given by Minister of State in the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Shri G.M. Siddeshwara in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.
