The Australian government has officially opened a project office in the French port of Cherbourg for the country’s SEA 1000 Future Submarine programme.

In a release on 9 July by Lockheed Martin Australia and Naval Group (formerly DCNS), it was revealed that the new secure facility will house submarine designers, naval architects, and engineers from Lockheed Martin Australia and Naval Group, as well as approximately 50 personnel from the Australian government.

Naval Group Chairman and CEO Herve Guillou said the company is “looking forward to establishing an Australian workforce in Cherbourg to develop the skills and understanding required to establish a regionally superior submarine and develop a sovereign Australian industrial capability.”

Naval Group’s Shortfin Barracuda 1A – a conventionally powered variant of the French Navy’s nuclear-powered Barracuda-class submarines – was down-selected by the Australian government in 2016.
