Australia lays keel for final Hobart-class destroyer

The keel for the third air warfare destroyer (AWD) on order for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) was laid down on 19 November, an official from the AWD Alliance has confirmed with IHS Jane's.

The vessel, which will be the future HMAS Sydney, is the last of three 6,350-tonne Hobart-class ADWs ordered under a contract signed in October 2007. First-of-classHobart was launched on 23 May 2015 while the second hull, Brisbane, was laid down on 3 February 2014.

According to IHS Jane's Fighting Ships, the Hobart class has an overall length of 146.7 m, an overall beam of 18.6 m, and a hull draught of 4.9 m.
