By Fayaz Wani

Srinagar, May 19: At least 5,861 Kashmiris will perform the annual Hajj pilgrimage this year.

The Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia. It is currently the largest annual pilgrimage in the world and is the fifth pillar of Islam, a religious duty that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslims and their submission to Allah. The Hajj is associated with life of Islamic Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from 7th century but the ritual of pilgrimage to Makkah is considered by Muslims to stretch back thousands of years to the time of Ibrahim (Abraham).

Pilgrims join processions of hundreds of thousands of people, who simultaneously converge on Makkah for the week of the Hajj, and perform a series of rituals.

According to Executive Officer, Kashmir Hajj Committee (KHC), Srinagar, as many as 5,861 Hajj seats have been allotted to Kashmir by the Hajj Committee of India for Hajj 2010.

He said the Kashmir Hajj Committee has already received 854 Hajj seats for Hajj 2010 under reserved category.

"As per the decision taken by the Hajj Committee of India, Mumbai, all those Hajj pilgrims who were applying for Hajj Pilgrimage for the last three years continuously have been confirmed. As such, out of 854 such applications, the Kashmir Hajj Committee has received 272 applications from Srinagar, 228 from Pulwama, 168 from Shopian, 46 from Islamabad , 54 from Baramulla, 25 from Budgam, 39 from Ganderbal, 4 from Leh and 18 from Kulgam," he said.

"Thus there remains only 5,007 Hajj seats for the draw of lots," he added.
