ISLAMABAD: The Army on Friday said that a special cell on missing persons had been established at the General Headquarters (GHQ).

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, in a meeting with Defence of Human Rights chairperson Amina Masood Janjua, disclosed that a special assistance cell was working at the GHQ to facilitate the process regarding missing persons.

The Defence of Human Rights is a non-governmental organisation that works on enforced disappearances. The ISPR chief met Ms Janjua to brief her on the efforts of the government and security forces for resolving the matter.

Military spokesperson says all cases of enforced disappearances cannot be attributed to state agencies

Although Gen Ghafoor had previously spoken about the issue at a recent press briefing, but it was rare for him to meet a NGO person working on the issue.

The meeting, although not directly related, but crucially comes after the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in a letter written to Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi last month said that “enforced disappearances is a human rights concern that has great resonance with the High Commissioner”. The correspondence reminded the foreign minister that UN human rights mechanisms had in the past also urged Pakistan government to address “widespread phenomenon of enforced and involuntary disappearances”.

Gen Ghafoor in his meeting with Ms Janjua said that the armed forces sympathised with families of missing persons, but all cases of enforced disappearances could not be attributed to the state agencies. “Those with state are under legal process,” he added.

The ISPR DG said some of those, who were unaccounted, could be in Afghanistan as part of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan ranks that had taken up sanctuary there or could be present in other conflict zones. “More so, there are many who got killed fighting as part of TTP against the state of Pakistan. Such individuals are also to be accounted somewhere while listing the missing persons,” he maintained.

.
ISPR is right , they have list of thousands over the period of time. Majority of missing person complaint registered during Afghan war , Where many join TTP and Taliban . First they fight against Russia then against NATO.

. .
Some have joined PTM and BLA as we recently found out.
Not only this ,many died during crossing Iranian desert to reach Europe or get killed on Turkish border or boat capsize near Greek waters, Australian waters, In Indonesian jails, drug smuggling . Human trafficking one of source. But, big chunk is missing in Afghanistan.

.
This is where the line gets drawn. This is where it becomes crystal as how Indian media has the back of its state. Completely the opposite of the scenario we have in our hands.

Pakistani media is in such a deplorable state when it comes to international stature that the is hardly any say of our so called big wig frogs of well anchor persons or their equally deplorable media houses constantly busy stroking their favorite politicians.

ISPR alone has been waging a constant war in international media with respect to the never ending missing persons saga precisely because it suits everyone in Pakistani media to keep the issue lingering as a sort of pressurizing and arm twisting tool against security forces and ISPR in general itself.

Pak media can be bought with money.

We are facing these problems because of the attitude of our elders! I must say this but our elders not the ones who made Pakistan but thereafter were bloody useless. Their short sightedness and poor vision is the reason why today we must fix things that should have been fixed by in their time. this 'koi gal nahi' attitude needs to be finished.

They did what they thought was best. You as the newer generation will do what you deem fit. It is a simple cycle of mistake and rectification. Why we the seniors made these mistakes needs to be studied carefully and honestly first.

if your army or civilian government does not have custody of missing persons what is the big deal ?
it is almost like someone does not want any scrutiny

Amazing intellect indeed. You guys really do keep insisting on falling below the cloudy intelligence quotient of Indian PM, that much I'll give it to you straight as your credit.

Who is afraid of scrutiny? Indian Agencies in IOK and a dozen other states of separatist movements all over India or other agencies all over the world like CIA with illegal detention centers and deplorable, sub human detention conditions spread all over the globe?

In Pakistan, missing persons is largely a political issue that small nationalist parties exploit to make a name for themselves and remain relevant by making noise along mostly racial lines. Main stream parties use it to make alliances, leverage concessions, and use them as clutches of some much needed street support to shore up their own weakening street power.

Now don't make me regret giving you enough time and a logical and factual answer. Then again you may enjoy by giving me an excuse to shower you with more praise.

it is one thing if the state participated in the disappearance and still have people in detention
lot of you guys insist that the state has nothing to do with the disappearance. you are answering your own question

Just as expected, no luck with a logical answer.

Anyway Jani, is there a point to your hypothesis beyond you guys insist this and that?

My explanation of missing persons saga is more than adequate as the local political scenario that it largely is about, amounts to insignificance when compared with actual human rights abuses next door and generally worldwide but you can keep calling roti ko chochi.

your response to the missing persons is that other governments do it. it is no consolation to the family of the missing person.

it is almost like the government does not want to be accountable. that drives the politics of the whole issue
