The Argentine government - in power for nearly a year - plans to invest USD1 billion in the armed forces in 2017 as it seeks to recover a variety of lost military capabilities.
Specifically, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the administration have agreed to invest that money for defence equipment purchases between 2017 and 2019. The request for equipment, made by armed forces commanders, reached a total of USD2.7 billion, but only one billion has already been authorised.
Many potential modernisation programmes are under study, but the government plans to soon begin awarding contracts for the first efforts.
The MoD announced on 11 November that it would initially buy 12 Beechcraft T-6C+ Texan II turboprop trainer/light attack aircraft to replace Embraer Tucanos at the Military Aviation School, for a total of about USD190 million, and two Airbus Military C295s to replace Fokker F27 Friendships, the last example of which is being retired this November.
