ANP critical of Waziristan operation

Saturday, December 12, 2009, By Mazhar Tufail

ISLAMABAD: There can be no success in the ongoing South Waziristan operation until a Malakand-like policy is adopted, the Awami National Party (ANP) said here on Friday.

“There has been no success in the Waziristan operation so far,” said ANP spokesman Senator Zahid Khan while talking to The News. “How can one claim a success until the anti-Pakistan foreign powers are investing money to destabilise the country and the bombings continue unabated?” he said.

The ANP information secretary said the main cause of terrorism in the country was the 35-year-old Jihad policy. He said until agreements like the one signed with Gul Bahadur and Mulla Nazir in North Waziristan were signed and people like Sirajuddin Haqqani were present in the country, the bombings would continue.

“The Jihad policy neither succeeded in Kashmir and Afghanistan nor would it succeed anywhere in future,” Senator Zahid Khan said. “Therefore, the government should change this policy because it is the need of the hour,” he stressed.

The ANP spokesman said if a Malakand-like policy was adopted, the Waziristan operation would meet a success very soon or the situation would not change. The spokesman said funding, training and equipping terrorists by foreign powers should be checked to save the country by putting an end to the growing incidents of terrorism.

Can't say I disagree, but I doubt that our operations won't expand onto the other groups once we're done with the TTP. Hmmm I wonder if the Senator is asking us to open new fronts to the war and attack everywhere in Waziristan? It sounds a lot like the American policy which wants us to fight on multiple fronts rather than one at a time.

PM Gillani has already highlighted that once Rah-e-Nijat is over, a next operation in Orakzai is already on the drawing board. I think General Kayani, the ONLY military commander racking up successes one after the other in the entire region (when compared to commanders of ALL countries) should be left to make the strategic calls on this one.

The guns blazing ideology didn't work for the US, admittedly it didn't work for Musharraf either, let the guy actually getting some results do his thing.
