India’s effort to build its first 5th generation fighter Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is all set to go official later this year. Ministry of Defense (MOD) in coming months will sanction funds for Phase-1 of the development of AMCA to start.

M-MRCA debacle and current negotiation for only two squadrons of Rafale fighter jet with France means Indian air forces declining combat strength will also fast track due to lack of intakes of newer aircrafts.

Instead of going for quick fix solutions in imports Indian air force should take a cue from the decade-long MMRCA procurement debacle and instead fast-track the development of AMCA which should now be taken up has a priority project which will provide long-term Indigenous solutions to current declining force level.

what MMRCA debacle has taught India is that We strategically cannot forever depend on arms imports for our Airforce and for PM Modi’s ” Make in India ‘ objective to become practical and successful we need to create and invest in capacity to produce Indigenous combat fighter jets and have the vision to make our Airforce fully indigenous in a decade or two to come .

While Development of Light combat aircraft (LCA) by ADA, DRDO, and HAL have provided our engineers and scientist, experience, and technological infrastructure for development of new generation aircrafts but we also need to allow Private players in defence to invest and work along Public sector units to lay their own foundation in Aerospace sector.

Participation of Private players in AMCA Project which is still in Phase-1 of its development and still very early in its developmental phase will help build further expertise in integration of weapons and avionics in private sector which will come handy in development of next generation of aircrafts post AMCA project.

AMCA according to Air-Staff requirements (ASR) released by IAF in 2010 will be 5th generation fighter aircraft which will incorporate Stealth features but will also be fully integrated with smart sensors, advanced weaponry which can be carried Internal and Externally will also have the ability to supercruise and will be generations ahead of anything currently operated by IAF.

Sources close to idrw.org have in past confirmed us that AMCA will be replacing wide range of legacy IAF fighter jets in medium-weight and multi-role category and AMCA’s future role in IAF will be of Multi-role fighter aircraft and its designers ADA (Aeronautical Development Agency ) from the word go will incorporate in its design ability to swing-role between Air-to-Air and Air-to-ground missions, which will enhance air forces capabilities dramatically since it will not require air cover or escort from other Air superiority fighters .

AMCA will draw upon from last three decades experience from LCA Program and we have to learn from our experience so that AMC meets its deadline and succeeds in meeting its timeline currently promised by its developers to the country .

While AMCA programme will receive its first phase of funding and will go official by end of this year, developers of AMCA first need, to identify a power plant in next three years which also have growth potential to meet requirements of further variants of AMCA which IAF might request . IAF for long too has been blamed for lack of long-term vision when it comes to requirements, AMCA is a program where IAF needs to be more than a customer and become partially a developer to be counted among best air forces who have involved themselves in their homegrown projects.

Are you sure about this...Can India really built a 5th Generation fighter???? I am really skeptical about it....Even while developing LCA Indian scientist had to go through lots shortcomings in their R&D Division they had to run countless wind tunnel tests whereas the nations which produce 5th gen fighters use super computers and save time and energy....
