Alibaba chief shows interest in enhancing trade with Pakistan

BEIJING – Jack Ma, the CEO of China’s biggest E-commerce sites, Alibaba expressed his interest to increase business with Pakistan in the future with an emphasis on promoting technology in the country.
In a meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia Conference 2018 on Tuesday, the E-commerce guru explored the areas where investment was needed to reap the benefits.
During the meeting, the prime minister said that Pakistan was a safe country for business citing the recent improvement in law and order situation.
Besides his huddle with Ma, the premier Abbasi also met Administrator of National Energy Administration (NEA) of China, Mr. Nuer Baikeli, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Ms. Carrie Lam, and other senior officials who had gathered to attend the Boao moot.
Let it be known that Pakistan had signed a memorandum of understanding, under the chair of former Premier Nawaz Sharif, with Alibaba Group Holdings Limited to boost Pakistan’s worldwide exports through e-commerce.
Under the said MoU, Alibaba along with Ant Financial and the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan agreed to enhance growth of worldwide exports of products by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country utilising online marketing and trade.
Last year, the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited the headquarter of e-Commerce giant Ali Baba in Hangzhou, China where he was given a detailed presentation on the company’s achievements and future planning.
Nawaz Sharif lauded the performance of the company and appreciated the efforts of its founder Jack Ma. He also recalled his meeting with Jack at Davos in January.
