Liquor in govt warehouses, wheat rots in open - India - ibnlive

Ludhiana: In Ludhiana, liquor is being stored in the grain godowns meant for protecting wheat. As the harvest season approaches, tons of wheat will decay as there is no place to store it.
Wheat continues to rots in the open outside a godown that belongs to the state warehouse corporation in Ludhiana while inside, crates of liquor are stacked by a private company that has taken the godown on rent.
However, the officials are quick to justify their stand as they claim the warehouse cannot be used to store food grains because it previously stored fertilizers

"In this godown, fertilizers used to be stored. After that, it is not fit for storage of wheat grains and rice," says Gurnam Singh, Ludhiana district manager Punjab State Warehouse Corporation.
Government officials also say the warehouses were first offered to the Food Corporation of India but it refused to use them.
Now, as the wheat harvest takes place in Punjab, several lakh tonnes of grains will be brought to these godowns. But then, they will be left to rot in the open, as the space inside continues to be used for storing liquor
