201U.K. Army Chief: Al Qaeda Can't Be Defeated - FoxNews.com0 | NewsCore

The head of Britain's armed forces warned Sunday that the West will never defeat Al Qaeda -- and suggested Prince Harry may return to Afghanistan, Sky News reported.

General David Richards said the national security of Britain was still at stake, but the threat could be contained to allow Britons to lead secure lives.

In an interview with The (London) Sunday Telegraph, he also revealed that Prince William was unlikely to serve in Afghanistan, but he suggested that Prince Harry could return to frontline duty in the campaign as a helicopter pilot.

The commander was speaking before the Remembrance Sunday ceremony in Whitehall, England, where he will lay a wreath in memory of Britain's war dead.

"Make no mistake, the global threat from Al Qaeda and its terrorist affiliates is an enduring one and one which, if we let it, will rear its head in states, particularly those that are unstable," Richards, 58, told the newspaper. "The national security of the UK, and our allies, is in my judgment, at stake."

He added: "In conventional war, defeat and victory is very clear cut and is symbolized by troops marching into another nation's capital.

"First of all you have to ask: do we need to defeat it [Islamist militancy] in the sense of a clear cut victory? I would argue that it is unnecessary and would never be achieved," Richards said. "But we can contain it to the point that our lives and our children's lives are led securely? I think we can."

Richards said the sacrifice being made by British troops in Afghanistan, where 343 soldiers have been killed since 2001, "has been worth it."

"If I thought for one minute that the majority of the Afghan people didn't want us any more -- then I and everyone else would say that it's time to go, we've failed. But there is no indication of that," he said.

The west can't beat Al Qaeda because it is waging a conventional bullets and bombs fight in a idealogical war.

Not just that - because its fighting people it trained 20 years ago for a "Holy cause" which has turned "Unholy" in 20 years.

It is fighting people who Dined at White house , who worked for CIA , Who have western nationality and speak English in American and British Accent.

They are fighting against their own agents who know what to expect , who know west's mentality and they surely know how to bring these capitalist economies to their knees and make their leaders go to countries Like India for business.

The downside is for us Pakistanis as this war has started in our Backyard and it will burn us a lot.

Dear BB,

Entire Asia is suffering from this problem. From WWI till today US has ensured that war is fought in other continents. It was US-Pak trained and financed extremists who escalated their war from Afghanistan to US soil. Hence, a new war was started by the US and see, today Pakistan is suffering more than Afghanistan.

We had to do that as Soveits wanted to take over Karachi and Gawadar to make their way for warm waters.

We had to fight and we won but the mistake was on US behalf to just bail out of the region once the job was done , now we are paying the price.

I cannot comment on point one as this is the first time I've heard about that...

On second point, once US was out of the region after Soviet withdrawal and fallout. It was Pakistan who bandwagon with these extremists to use them against India. However, the ambitions of these extremists were not limit and they were ready to fight with the US.

After 9/11 the honeymoon period of these extremists was over when they denied to handover Osama to US. By now it was clear that US is going to demolish those who are against them and helping Taliban.

Now, Pakistan have to choose between the two, US or Taliban. Pakistan join hands with US and believe me that it was the best decision because instead of complete burn you are suffering less burns and that too with US' nursing...

BB and Novice09,
You are both living in an imaginary world. Pakistan is not suffering more than Afghanistan, for one. And secondly, Pakistan's suffering is because of its OWN "blowback" problem. Pakistan played with fire to harm India.
And Pakistan still has the burning match in its hand. Now Pakistan's fingers are burning. It's Pakistan's own damn fault. Not that of the USA. Pakistan must give up its jihadi friends or it will never see either peace or prosperity.

Are you sure? Are you sure these people are friends when Pakistan was the country which suffered the most from bombings.
You have mutual ennemies. Why don't you speak frankly together how to work together?
