KARACHI:
Eight-time South Asian Games medallist Asim Qureshi will represent Pakistan in the World Table Tennis Individual Championship that will take place in the Netherlands from May 8.

Qureshi, who has spent almost a decade in the wilderness, not playing in any tournament, is one of the five players chosen by the Pakistan Table Tennis Federation (PTTF) to represent the country in the six-day event. The rest of the players are Ali Faisal, Yasir Iqbal, Shabnam Bilal and Ayesha Iqbal.

Qureshi, the former Pakistan number one ranked 500th in the world now, said he is only taking part in the tournament after help from a private sponsor.

“It’s going to be a huge test for me,” Qureshi told The Express Tribune.

“The last time I played in the world individual championship was in 1999. The PTTF has been asking me to participate but they would never sponsor. This time too they haven’t.”

According to Qureshi, the PTTF officials have not been serious about the preparations and though a camp will be held in Lahore next week, no coach is available to help the players.

As usual the government of Pakistan does not provide any help/funds to sports which means many athletes in Pakistan are unable to reach their potential :disagree:

. . .
In good old days, Asim Qureshi was my senior and use to be Pakistan # 5-6 and Arif Khan and later Frjad Saif from Karachi use to be #1-2 and Bilal Yaseen from Lahore use to be number 3-4.

We (Asim Qureshi) use to play in same club. only three tables and lot of us waiting for turns. ;) While waiting time we use to enjoy watching games of Asim Qureshi (phata) as he was known and other at the same level. I loved his Lahori style Punjabi as i was still the school boy 16 years old, almost done.
Asim Qureshi has a unique style of holding the racket which no other player of the world has ever attempted.
I wonder how is he still so quick!
Some times, he would grant (me) training knock with him.... :)
i use to take old/used rubbers of Qureshi ;) i couldn't afford an new MARK-V or butterfly sheets.

Shabnam (Rana) Bilal is my class fellow from school starting from prep., zero in studies that's why in grade 9 she went to Arts and me in Science.
Actually there were at least 3 more girls in my class equally good but those preferred studies.

I'm surely missing my old neighbor Asim Shehzad! no mention of him! He suppose to be challenger of Asim Qureshi in Pakistan.
May be the the young Asim is retired by now and amazingly senior Asim is still rocking.

Guys table teniss is all about speed..... If i drop any thing from my hand, i catch it back before it reach ground.... 80% success rate.

BTW.... I'm all Punjb inter collegiate winner (team of three) 1989, and i could not continue after.

Color bik raha hai. (Pakistan's color is being handed out on basis of cash not merit)
Listen to the plight of Zardari's Pakistan from the mouth of Asim Qureshi.
