Tensions with Iran. The historic Trump-Kim border meeting. Turkey buying Russian anti-aircraft systems, threatening the NATO alliance.

There is, as usual, so much going on in the world of national security.

But there is one place on earth right now that Americans are most in harm’s way.

It is Afghanistan, the place of this nation’s longest war.

The recent deaths of three more service members and two more contractors serve as a painful reminder that while much of the nation might have forgotten, Afghanistan remains a deadly place for the men and women who serve there.

Since October, 2001, when the U.S. launched Operation Enduring Freedom in response to the attacks of 9/11, more than 2,400 U.S. troops have perished.

So far this year, 10 have paid the ultimate price, either through combat, accident or non-combat incident under investigation.

To the Gold Star families who have lost a loved one, the cause does not matter, only the sacrifice.

And to the nation at large it should not matter, either.

Men and women are put into harm’s way, in the public’s name and on the public’s dime. It is a price born by too few and ignored by too many.

And it is a calculus the Commander in Chief, whoever sits in the White House, must take into account when deciding to continue to spend American blood and treasure.

Recently, President Donald Trump said while he wanted to pull the plug on America’s troop investment in Afghanistan, he was dissuaded by military leaders who convinced him otherwise.

“The problem is, it just seems to be a lab for terrorists,” he told Fox News host Tucker Carlson, echoing a long-held belief by many, but not all in the military, that if we don’t fight the enemy in Afghanistan, we will fight them here.

There are still some 9,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Trump recently told Fox News, the vast majority trying to help the Afghans help themselves.

But while Afghan troops have taken the lead on the fight, their nation remains the most dangerous place on earth for ours.

So as negotiations with the Taliban continue, let us not forget that.

And remember these names.

Master Sgt. Micheal B. Riley, 32, and Sgt. James G. Johnston, 24, died June due to injuries sustained by small arms fire in Afghanistan’s Uruzgan Province.

Sgt. 1st Class. Elliott J. Robbins, 31, from Ogden, Utah, died June 30, 2019, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related incident. U.S. Navy veteran Kevin Yali, 27, died June 19 in Afghanistan from a mortar shell. And retired Chief Warrant Officer Four Christian H. McCoy, 49, was killed June 24 in Afghanistan.

There are a lot of issues in the national security space competing for our attention.

Considering the human cost is the least we can do.

If we do not have any political issues with Pakistan, i could have wished Afganistan to merge with Pakistan...If people of Afganistan do not bond with each other in the name of nationalism and fight with each for racial identities, then it is better for them to merge with Pakistan or Iran and have a peaceful life

That is the destiny of Afghanistan. Merger with Pakistan is only matter of time now once NA,ANA, NDS is completely eliminated.

Pakistan and Afghanistan belong together under one state.

Not merger with Pakistan but formation of government supported by their people free of foreign influence this current government is surviving only due to American funding and military support and at the same time a movement is running there entire world is against them but still they are gaining strength only due to the support of common people Afghanistan should be like what it was from 96 to 2001 and if that's not possible then just seal the border and forget there any country exists at the western border of Pakistan called Afghanistan no trade no people to people relations no government relations nothing

Short term, you are right. They can use a few years under Taliban to cleanse their society and bring back some ghairat.

Long term, Afghanistan and Pakistan will become one country. That country then will become a super power.

Pakistan is the spark which will ignite the flames of Muslims everywhere for self-rule and independence from being puppets of foreigners.

Balkanization is the solution to the quagmire of Afghanistan.

Balkanization is the only solution. I don't know why USA hasnt done that yet. Majority of the population of the country are not even Afghans. There should be a separate country for Pashtun majority areas, Tajik majority areas must join Tajikistan, Uzbeks Uzbekistan, Turkmen Turkmenistan etc.

It won't work either. No body is ready to take any part of Afghanistan.

No it's not and will fail badly.

Afghanistan merging with Pakistan sounds like the better option. Merging Afghanistan with Iran...hmmm...that will make Iran regional hegemon overnight.

Afghans hate Pakistan. It will be a complete disaster. Massive civil war. Worse than what exists in Afghanistan today.

Pakistan should get Wakhan corridor for facilitating peace talks and rest of Afghanistan can go toward peace. :enjoy:

Pakistan would never like to merge Afghanistan as they don't have any resources current Afghan government is surviving only due to US funding and it's impossible for Pakistan to secure such a large area it took Pakistan more than a decade to secure FATA which is only 27000 square kilometers and population as per 2017 census is 5.5 million
And Afghanistan's area is 652000 square kilometers

A BIG "NO WAY". Even if the afghans willingly joined Pakistan, we would turn into the biggest hell-hole planet earth HAS EVER seen, within 20 years. afghans and afghanistan always seem to destroy everything that is worthwhile. Even for themselves.
