KABUL (PAN): Pakistan's army chief, Gen. Pervez Kayani, used "threatening language" during his talks with President Hamid Karzai in Brussels last week, a senior official alleged on Monday.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, who hosted the talks, said they had a very extensive and a very productive and constructive dialogue. "But we have all agreed that results are what will tell the story, not statements at a press conference,” Kerry told reporters after the talks.

Kayani warned the war season in Afghanistan was about to begin, said the Afghan official, who declined to be identified. "By referring to the Taliban spring offensive, Kayani wanted to mount pressure on Karzai," he added.

"During the meeting, aimed at defusing bilateral tension, Gen. Kayani's attitude was palpably aggressive," said the official, who also attended the Brussels talks.

"We have long been feeling the US and Pakistan are promoting the same agenda in Afghanistan," he remarked, saying Islamabad did not want a strong government in Kabul and the US sought to use a weak Afghan administration to protect its own interests in the region.

The Taliban have announced the launch of their spring offensive, signalling plans to step up attacks across the nation. The rebels vowed on Saturday "every possible tactic will be utilised in order to detain or inflict heavy casualties on the foreign transgressors," including suicide attacks on military bases and diplomatic areas.

In the Belgian capital on Wednesday, Kerry hosted the meeting between Karzai and Kayani and senior Foreign Secretary Jalil Jilani to calm tensions over border disputes and the stalled peace process.

Kabul has grown increasingly frustrated with Islamabad over efforts to pursue a peace process involving the Taliban. Kabul suggests Islamabad is intent on keeping Afghanistan unstable until foreign combat forces leave at the end of 2014.

The meeting followed weeks of tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan over their 2,600-km border and stalled peace efforts.

Afghan officials allege the Pakistan military continues to shell Afghan villages in eastern parts and had recently constructed new installations along the shared frontier by acting unilaterally.

I had been wondering what Kerry meant by this statement ever since it had been reported.

I was listening to President Pervez Musharraf's election campaign talk which was recorded prior to him returning to Pakistan (currently being aired on ARY News along with former Pakistan Air Force Chief's talk). He clearly said that Pakistan will only tolerate a pro-Pakistan government in Afghanistan as Pakistan does not want enemies on both side of the border.

I think this is what Pakistan Armed Forces what they'll get one way or the other. Americans seem to agree as well so I predict a very violent and a very swift Taliban take over of Afghanistan in 2015. Allahu Alam.

Very silly to use threatening language against Afghanistan at this point of time. :agree:

Solidarity with the Afghan victims
Afghan Victims oka thats strange Bcz Pakistan has the worlds biggest refugee camp if we are giving them refugee how come we became their oppressor isnt that idiotic

Karzai is extremely corrupt, no doubt about that. But one thing I like about him is how much pain, or "takleef" he causes for Pakistanis from all walks of life. He is like a rock in their shoes. They're not used to a person like him, and would rather see a puppet like Amir al Momineen Mullah Omar rule Kabul, who can only say yes to Pakistan's requests.

It means this: 'We have achieved squat after the talks'.

Normally after successful talks, the participants attend a joint press conference and put out a joint statement, and then answer questions in a way that supports their statements. That is how people consider talks a success.

The Brussels meeting had none of those. That line was for Kerry's face saving.

Correct. That is what Pakistan's army thinks. And that is what Afghans are worried about. The Americans are fine with Taliban takeover, but first the Taliban should make a name-sake deal with the US. So that Obama can tell his people, we withdrew in order and achieved our objective. That is why they are searching with magnifying lenses and telescopes among Taliban to find some 'moderates' among them. So that the secretaries of Obama can write books and memoirs about their success.

First, the Indians have been muscled out of the picture. Second, President Hamid Karzai is trying to resist the muscling... futile, I say.

I can imagine General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani asking President Hamid Karzai in front of the American Ambassador: "Do you want to go quietly or... ?"

What is Kayani thinking about His country and Afghanistan?

Is he in a position to threaten Karzai, I don't think so. Threatening with Militant propaganda of which his own country is a victim.

Karzai is non productive and useless person who is governing only kabul since 10 years and taking billions of dollars aids. in his governments curaption, drugs and Kalashnikov culture is spread out around the Afghanistan and due to his failure administration Pakistan is most affected country becoz 5 million refugees came to Pakistan and bring extremism.

Maybe they should learn to be at peace with themselves and their neighbours before lobbing accusations it seems they're learning bad habits from the other side

And at any rate ANA conduct hasn't exactly been friendly either so if COAS used a harsh language then I say - good. They are acting like enemies when they lob shells and issue inappropriate comments to the media

The news is for local consumption.

on the other hand the Karzai govt official is blaming US as well.

Karzai's sanity is questionable.
