ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf, who turned politically quiescent in the wake of the February 18 general elections, has suddenly decided to turn active and initiated a series of meetings with members of the parliament at his erstwhile Army House residence in Rawalpindi.
The PML-Q members of the National Assembly from Faisalabad, Rana Asif Tauseef and Muhammad Asim Nazir, had an important and lengthy meeting with President Musharraf in his Camp Office in Rawalpindi on Saturday, political sources claimed on Sunday. They discussed the political and economic situation of the country, the political sources said.
The MNAs urged the president to play his role in alleviating the sufferings of the people and thwarting the emerging crises, the sources said. The president was of the view that he was not willing to play the role he assumed in the previous administration and would like to see the government serve with a free hand, so that the presidency was not blamed for any misadventure, they said.
The president seemed visibly depressed over the emerging situation and conceded that the recent events had extremely perturbed him, they further said. The two parliamentarians had specially come to see the president and left Islamabad immediately after the meeting, they added.
The sources disclosed that President Musharraf would have an extensive meeting with the disgruntled members of the PML-Q early next week in the capital. It will be his first such meeting with a group of the party he created in the not so past, the sources said. He will be hosting a meal in their honour and have frank discussion about the overall situation, they said.
It is unlikely that Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Faisal Saleh Hayat will be invited, they said. Majority of the PML-Q members are expected to be present at the meeting, they claimed. The meeting could pave the way for the removal of the Chaudhrys from the PML-Q leadership, they claimed.
The rendezvous and timings of the meeting would be determined immediately after the outcome of the London parleys, they said. This meeting will have a direct bearing on the emerging scenario, they added.
The political sources revealed to The News that under a well-calculated strategy, the presidential camp planned to dislodge the Chaudhrys from the helm of affairs of the Q-League and bring in leaders, who could actively support the ongoing bid for reconciliation.
The move was frustrated earlier by the Chaudhrys on several occasions who responded to the president with a big ìnoî late last month, the sources further revealed. This, however, resulted in their break up with the presidency, the sources said. Since then, the presidential camp is engaged in formulating an alternative strategy, they said.
A former boss of rangers in Lahore, who once used to be called as ìSHOî of the president, has been instrumental in working out the strategy, the sources said. The establishment of the so-called forward blocs in the PML-Q in the Punjab Assembly, Balochistan Assembly and now in the National Assembly after the Senate is reportedly the handiwork of the cronies of the presidential camp, the sources said. The members of these forward blocs will work as the launching pads for the new group in the ranks of the PML-Q, they said.
The move could give birth to another group of the Muslim League called the Pakistan Muslim League-Musharraf (PML-M), they claimed. The members of the group would work as the standby players if the incumbent ruling coalition is found losing the number game in the parliament at any point of time if any coalition partner pulls out of the government, they concluded.
