A mini Ice Age coming soon
Mankind survived the last Ice Age. We are certainly capable of surviving this one. All it depends on is whether we are able to learn from our mistakes. - Jack Hall, The day after tomorrow.
Imagine yourself standing on a glacier and the air around you is so cold that it freezes you right there even though you are living in a dessert? Our climate is changing to an extent that polar bears have started eating dolphins. As astounding as it sounds, it is a mini lethal era that we are heading towards. The ice age is an age when the earth's temperature will fall as low as -150 degree Celsius and every living and non-living thing will freeze. The alpine glaciers and ice sheets will expand leading to cooling of the planet and hibernation of the sun.
According to a research done by a group of European researchers, certain observations were unraveled that clearly pointed out to the fact that we are heading towards a 'mini ice age'. This challenges and even goes at length to discard the most popular notion of global warming that scientists still cling on to. In between the major ice ages, humans have experienced several mini ice ages. These were not as destructive and harmful as the major ones but they sure did shift the continents slightly. These European researchers have indeed posed a great challenge to those who argued that by 2030, Earth will have melting glaciers and rising sea levels due to global warming. The solar activities happening today are quite similar to the ones that happened before the previous mini ice age that occurred in the 17th century. That mini ice age caused River Thames to freeze and it became passable by foot according to some historical records.
A recent climate summit organised in France was also home to the discussion regarding the threats of a mini-ice age. Global leaders and members of the assembly addressed the issue at large and suggested plans to prevent causalities.
Earth has given birth to some of the most enchanting creatures that leave the human mind flabbergasted. The giant mammoths and armadillos, the megafaunas and other giant birds are survivors of the previous ice ages. The giant mammoths and megafaunas can still be seen in the form of elephants and giraffes.
In pop culture, novels and even in fiction we have seen many depictions of an ice age devastating the human race. The long cooling winters as depicted by Charles Dickens in his book pointed towards a mini ice age experienced in sometime between the 1700's and 1800's. Furthermore, the strange cold summers as told by Mary Shelly gave birth to the monster named "Frankenstein" a renowned character of a thrilling storybook of the same name. ‘The Ice Age’ animated movie series looks so enchanting to the eye but in reality an actual mini ice age can be catastrophic as we might return back to the stone age where our current technology might cease to exist. We do not exactly know when this " mini ice age" may hit us but it is believed that with the rising level of greenhouse emissions, it is likely to occur in the near future.
An accelerating increase in burning of fossil fuels and other malpractices have been observed by scientists worldwide, who have termed these as one of the many reasons of the next ice age occurrence. In the realm of global tensions, it is possible that our planet has experienced five extensive ice ages previously namely; the Huronian, the Karoo Ice Age, Andean-Sahara, Cryogenian and the Quaternary glaciation. According to scientists, the Huronian ice age occurred nearly 2.4 billion years ago. The Cryogenian ice age is considered as the most well documented age of sun hibernation and also the most vigorous and cruel. It occurred nearly 630 million years ago and caused ice sheets to reach near the equator. The last major ice-age may have ended some 8000 years ago but its aftermaths can still be seen in some parts of Canada and Antarctica. Previously, mankind has survived the ice age by covering itself against extreme weather by mainly using animal skin that assisted in keeping them warm. As soon as the ice age started, the eradicating human beings of those times made full use of the weather and started developing agriculture and domestication of animals and plants.- historical records.
As reported by a Spanish citizen, they did not experience winter in Spain even in December this year to the extent that they had the same time last year. This sort of unexpected weather change and shift can be more likely a reason towards a disturbance in the solar activity leading towards a "mini ice age". Pakistan is well known for experiencing all four seasons. However, this year it is quite strange that even in December, at the time this feature was being written, it has not been as cold as it was the previous year. Clearly, this sort of a sudden and drastic shift in climate can lead towards turbulence in the earth's atmosphere.
The Ice age, as much as it is a naturally occurring phenomenon, it poses unquestionable threats to the existence of mankind. However, these can be mitigated if we immediately stop all unnecessary carbon emissions around the world. At least, it can be delayed for another 1000 years.
In a nutshell, as we move towards an incredibly cold ice age, we must learn from our mistakes and thrive towards saving fossils and natural resources. It is of paramount importance that we take heed from our ancestors who survived the previous ice ages. Come what may and as many extraordinary measures we might have to take, we must not stop the fight to overcome this rapidly approaching mini-catastrophe.Perhaps only then,we could leave a better planet for generations to come.
