For Mudasir Jamil and his friends, it was the first-ever taste of a burger and the glitzy city life. Twenty school students from the Drass region in Jammu & Kashmir, who are quite used to sub-zero temperatures, had an enlightening experience on Tuesday, thanks to the Indian Army and the Gurgaon police.

As part of a motivational tour under Operation Sadbhavana, these students came to Gurgaon and interacted with the joint commissioner of police, Maheshwar Dayal.

“Interacting with them was a different experience, we tried to make them comfortable. The Gurgaon police will provide any kind of support with regard to education or scholarships. We gave them gifts and told them about the importance of the role of the police and that they should fight terrorism without fear,” said Dayal.

After the interactive session, the students went to the Ambience mall in the afternoon as a part of their trip. They were awed by the swanky showrooms — the children were so mesmerised by the ambience that they made merry inside a home décor store. Before they left the mall, they were served lunch at McDonalds. “We have never seen so many lights. All of us have truly enjoyed ourselves in Gurgaon. We wish the experience could be shared with our families,” said Asif Ali, a student of Class 8 at a middle school in Drass.

“The students have never been out of Drass before. They only witnessed all these places on television or newspapers. It’s a great feeling,” said Mohammad Shafi, a teacher at a primary school in Drass.

The Kingdom of Dreams also invited the children to enjoy the evening with the fun-filled musical —Jhumroo.

After their trip to Gurgaon, the students will be visiting the National Sports Academy in Patiala.
The students also visited Chandigarh and Delhi in the past few days where they interacted with the Kings XI Punjab team and visited the Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhawan and India Gate.

The touring party also consisted of three teachers and four army personnel, including an officer, Major SS Dhindsa. “The tour has been organised under the aegis of 8 Mountain Division, 56 Mountain Brigade and 10 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAK LI) of the Indian Army. We appreciate the efforts of Gurgaon police for making this trip a success,” said Dhindsa.

Under Operation Sadbhavana, the Indian Army undertakes various goodwill activities to uplift the social, emotional, physical and intellectual living standards of the people in remote areas like Drass.
