Bloody end to Philippines hostage drama
Gunman, tourists killed in Manila hostage drama - The Globe and Mail

A 12-hour hostage stand-off on a hijacked Philippine bus ended in bloodshed Monday, with officials saying at least seven Chinese tourists were dead along with the disgruntled ex-policeman who seized their vehicle in a bid to get his job back.

At least six captives survived, four of whom were seen crawling out the back door of the bus after Philippine police stormed it Monday evening when the hostage-taker started shooting at the 15 Chinese tourists inside, said police Senior Superintendent Nelson Yabut.

He said the hostage-taker was killed with a sniper shot to the head after he wounded a police sharpshooter.

Police and ambulances were lined up next to the vehicle in the pouring rain after the standoff ended. Local hospitals reported seven bodies of hostages were brought in. One other hostage was hospitalized in critical condition, and five others were unharmed.

Officials have yet to disclose the fate of the two other hostages.

The crisis began when the dismissed policeman, Rolando Mendoza, 55, armed with a M16 rifle seized the busload of Hong Kong tourists to demand his reinstatement in the force.

According to newspaper reports from 2008, he was among five officers who had been charged with robbery, extortion and grave threats after a Manila hotel chef filed a complaint alleging the policemen falsely accused him of using drugs to extort money.

The gunman released nine hostages during the afternoon — leaving 15 inside — and demanded his job back to free the rest. Despite hopes that negotiations might bring the stand-off to a peaceful conclusion, tensions escalated as night closed in.

Police said they stormed the bus after they saw Mr. Mendoza open fire on hostages.

Moments before the commandos moved in, the Filipino driver fled. Police officer Roderick Mariano cited him as saying Mr. Mendoza had opened fire at the tourists.

Big dent for the Filipino Tourist Industry.

Rest in peace.

That policeman was f___ing stupid. Does he really expect to get his job back for comitting a CRIME ?

Why don't the philippine police negotiator agree to his demand and then arrest him afterwards? It's not like he is demanding for 10 million dollars.

This is going to be a huge boost to Chinese police's reputation. There has been controversies in China on use of force by the Chinese police in hostage situations. I'm expecting those controversies to die down after the Chinese public witnessed what a truly incompetent police force is like.

In the first few seconds you can see a man lying at the door of the bus. Apparently that was the hostage taker and if one sees carefully, you can see that he's getting shot in the head! Graphic

I fully support the killing of hostage takers. Why bother dealing with such scum with nonlethal means when the person in question is serious about killing innocent people.

Apparently the hostage taker was a decorated Police Officer of the Manila force. In fact in 2000 he was considered among the top 10 police officers in the country. Later on he was mired in corruption and other drug related charges! One can imagine why the hostage crisis was difficult to solve given the fact that the hostage taker was an able police officer!

These idiots make the keystone cops look good. I mean f***, dropping smoke grenades, dropping the sledge hammers, TAKING FOREVER from breach to entry (giving the hostage taker plenty of time to slaughter hostages). No doubt military professionals around the world are shaking their heads at this.

Snipers work well in hostage situations. Though it would have been harder since the guy was inside the bus.

Hijacker guns down 8 HK tourists in Manila
08:10, August 24, 2010

A hijacker killed eight Hong Kong tourists and wounded another seven in a 10-hour hostage-taking ordeal and eventual shootout in the Philippines’s capital Manila, officials said Monday night.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said he was weary of the authorities' handling of the siege, the violent final stages of which were beamed live by global news channels, according to local reports.

The gunman, identified as 55-year-old ex-police captain Rolando Mendoza who was armed with an M-16 assault rifle, had stopped the bus, which initially had 25 people on board, on a wide road in Manila's biggest park in the morning.

"The hostage-taker was killed. He chose to shoot it out with our men," police Colonel Nelson Yabut told reporters.

"On our first assault, Captain Mendoza was sprawled in the middle of the aisle and shot one of our operatives. On our second assault we killed him."

Donald Tsang said he was extremely sad and disappointed over the tragedy and the loss of lives of Hong Kong residents, expressing anger over the "cold-blooded" killings.

He said his government would do whatever it could to assist the families involved, and his spokesman, Andy Ho, said that included the arranging of Cathay Pacific flights for family members, the first of which left at midnight and another was scheduled to depart this morning at eight.

The deputy security minister, government officials from the security bureau, psychologists, doctors and police and immigration officials were all aboard the flight Monday night.

The gunman got on the bus and "declared he was taking the passengers hostage" with an M16 assault rifle at Rizal Park, where the Hong Kong tourists had just finished sightseeing and boarded the bus, the travel agency's spokesman told the Global Times.

The hostage-taker, 55-year-old gunman Rolando Mendoza, identified as a former senior inspector, was demanding he be given back his job on the police force a year after he was fired, Manila Police Chief Rodolfo Magtibay told media.

For most of the day, the gunman had appeared to be negotiating calmly with police. During the period, he released nine of the hostages, including three children, an elderly man and two Filipinos, before the situation deteriorated, according to RTHK, a Hong Kong-based radio station.

The bus driver, a Filipino, was later seen escaping the storytour bus after freeing himself from handcuffs that the gunman had put on him.

The end of the hostage drama came more than an hour after the Philippine police stormed the hijacked bus, killing the gunman by shooting him in the head.
