$400 Billion China-Iran Deal Includes a $Billion 4G-5G Network, Most Likely Huawei

China's tech giant Huawei spans much of the globe despite U.S. efforts to ban it. Add Iran to this map. (Source: NPR)

China has agreed to buy $16 billion/year of Iranian oil in what amounts to a barter arrangement for Chinese goods. Telecommunications is specifically included, with a $billion or more for an upgraded mobile system. Huawei & ZTE will probably split the contract.

Iran's population is 84 million, about the same as Germany or Turkey. That's as much as Ireland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands combined. Nothing's announced, but it will be a big deal.

Meng Wanzhou is under house arrest in Canada, nominally for misleading a bank about Huawei trade with Iran. It turns out that communications equipment is specifically excluded from the Iran blockade. Nokia has long been active in Iran, and Samsung is the leading phone brand.

Despite the blockade, Iran remains an advanced industrial economy that exports steel and has nuclear engineering capabilities. When the political storms clear, I expect Huawei will do important research in the country.

Many top wireless engineers come from Iran, such as Caltech Professor Babak Hassibi, who worked with legendary Stanford Professor Thomas Kailath. A friend who teaches at Stanford tells me Sharif University in Tehran has been sending him outstanding graduate students. Sharif Professor Mohammad Fakharzadeh has published over 75 papers in communications.

Great to see that Iran is going with Huawei gear for the 5G....Chip design and nm chip fab lines is something Iran needs to invest more and both ZTE and Huawei can be a good sources for these also...

What is confusing is as I know at least 4 to 5 cities like Tehran, Mashad, Shiraz and Kish island have already started their 5G network ... so what exactly China is gonna do that Iran can not do by itself?

Iran should be careful in dealing with Chinese telecom companies and equipment. They pose a national security threat and will act as moles for China.

Well, Iran don't have technology to make 5G. Iran is best sticking to making ballistic missiles.

And US companies pose no national security thread to Iran, right? Are you kidding me.
There are other firms in the world that can be used. Are you joking? I wouldn't let Chinese firms touch my country's strategic sectors with a barge pole.

I am glad more and more countries around the world are not allowing Chinese telecom firms in their network up-gradation process.

Here we see the typical example of the Indian intellect. Hey, genius, Iran is under sanctions from the West. It's Huawei or nothing.

Well, Iran sure can't get 5G from Russia. Hell, Russia can't even make 4G let alone 5G.
Who are you? and why not try to make those equipments by yourself?

India can't make anything. India can't even make tank engine or fighter jet radar.

Congrats to China
The biggest win ever for Ccp
Iran is finished they are so desperate they take the last straw before being drowned.
Now you can make Iran to a colony and flood it with cheap products made in China.
Yes it’s Huawei or Nothing.

It seems likely that with a new Government in the US, sanctions would likely be eased in a year. However, telecom equipment installed will be integrated into Iran for a decade, becoming a big threat.

The US has assassinated beloved Iranian heroes and you think Iran wants Western telecom providers in there? Versus China, which has been generally friendly to Iran. Are you serious? What world do you live in?
