A joint operation carried out by special ops units from the gendarmerie and police has led to the deaths of at least 40 terrorists from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) over the past five days in the Kazan Valley in Hakkari province, the Cihan news agency reported on Sunday.

The operation was launched to track down those responsible for the deaths of three soldiers on Wednesday in Çukurca, also in Hakkari. The special ops units used intelligence provided by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that indicated the presence of a large group of terrorists in the Kazan Valley area. Fighter jets from the Diyarbakır Air Base and Sikorsky helicopters are being used in the operation.

As the operation in the region continues, three police officers and two village guards that were killed by the PKK last week were laid to rest on Saturday. Police Chief Yalçın Dizdaroğlu and officers Okan Koç and Ertuğrul Polat were killed in a PKK attack against special ops police teams in Hakkari's Kırıkdağ village. Three terrorists were killed during the clashes that followed the attack.

Officers Dizdaroğlu and Koç were buried following funerals in Ankara while a funeral for Polat was held in his hometown of Gaziantep. Thousands attended his funeral.

Koç is survived by his wife and the couple's 6-month-old daughter. He was stationed in Hakkari for the past two years. Polat is survived by his wife, whom he married about four months ago. Family and friends stated that Polat's widow is two-and-a-half months pregnant. Dizdaroğlu is survived by his wife and three children. He was temporarily stationed in Hakkari, where the attack took place.

Two village guards, Mehmetcan Yeşildağ and Mehmet Reşit Aysal, were killed by the PKK on Friday in Ortakapı, a village in Bitlis, in a PKK attack on a military unit in the region. Their funerals were held on Saturday.

On Sunday, a remote-controlled mine believed to have been planted by the PKK exploded along the Lice-Diyarbakır highway, the Diyarbakır Governor's Office announced. No casualties were reported. The mine exploded while security forces inside an armored vehicle were traveling along that highway.

Fighting between the military and the PKK intensified over the summer, a development that Ankara sees as linked to the chaos in neighboring Syria. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of arming the PKK terrorists.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict since the PKK took up arms in 1984 with the aim of carving out a Kurdish state.
