Washington [State] death toll from coronavirus hits 31

The statewide death toll from the coronavirus climbed to 31 on Thursday after King County reported a man in his 80s dying at EvergreenHealth a day earlier, health officials said.

So far, 27 people have died from COVID-19 in King County, three in Snohomish County and one in Grant County. Of the 27 deaths reported, 22 are associated with Life Care Center of Kirkland.

It’s been 13 days since Life Care Center went on quarantine. Sixty-three residents have been infected and 22 people have died from COVID-19. Only a sixth of the employees have been tested and the nursing home doesn’t have a single staff test result back.

“Because you think you’d want to be very accountable to anyone who’s come in and out...finally you’re saying we’ll check on them – see where they’re at,” said Tim Killian with Life Care Center.

Kilian said Life Care is now understaffed with a third of nurses not at work because they themselves are showing signs of coronavirus. Family members like Bridget and Carmen fear with less nurses that there will be less care for their loved ones inside.

“As a family member, hearing that a nurse still hasn’t been testedI don’t want them going room to room and infecting whoever is not infected,” Bridget said.

The number of confirmed cases in Washington state is at least 457, according to new numbers posted Thursday by the state Department of Health.
