Four suspected militants and one soldier were killed in a gunfight that erupted between the suspects and security forces in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district early on Friday morning.
Sources said the casualties occurred when security forces circled a suspected militant hideout in Khochipora village of Tangmarg.
A police official said the police and two of the army’s Rashtriya Rifles had launched a joint operation at around 6:30 am on Friday after receiving information about militants being present in the area.
When the joint team cordoned off the Khochipora, they were fired upon.
“The exchange of fire continues,” the official said.
A senior police official told IANS news agency that they had closed in on the house where the militants were hiding when the firing started.
“Security forces surrounded Khochipora village in Tangmarg area late on Thursday night following information that two militants were hiding in the village,” the senior police official said.
The encounter comes a day after three militants were killed in a gun battle in Nowgam sector of Handwara town after trying to infiltrate the Indian side of Kashmir.
