351 cases disposed of during CJ’s 6-day Karachi visit

KARACHI: In order to meet the demand of litigant public as well as advocates of the Sindh Province and to achieve the objective for quick and early disposal of the cases, enunciated in the National Judicial Policy-2009, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry held Court session at the Supreme Court Branch Registry, Karachi, from May 17 to 21.

The Bench No-I, headed by the chief justice decided 268 cases while the Bench No-II, headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, decided 83 cases.During court session, both the benches decided 351 cases in one week.

Now total pendency of the cases at the Branch Registry, Karachi, has considerably reduced to 325 cases. Out of the disposed of cases, a good number of cases were of Human Rights or public importance, including the collapse of Sher Shah flyover bridge, in which a number of people had died or received serious injuries.

The chief justice during the visit also met various Bar associations, who presented their problems/difficulties, and the same were agreed to be addressed, particularly, the backlog of cases pending in the lower courts and their disposal in the light of guidelines embodied in the National Judicial Policy-2009.

The Bar associations reposed their confidence in the judiciary and promised to extend full cooperation for the implementation of National Judicial Policy-2009. They reiterated the harmonious relations between Bench and Bar and appreciated the efforts of the chief justice of Pakistan for strengthening the relation of judiciary in the society.

The chief justice emphasized upon lawyers to be sincere to their profession, to avoid adjournments and to eradicate corruption from judiciary/society. He laid stress on enhancing the public confidence in the judiciary and quick relief to the public and emphasized upon the appointment of judges and fill up of the vacant posts in Sindh districts.

The CJ also held meeting with Justice Ghulam Rabbani, the Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, and chief justice of the Sindh High Court regarding revival of criminal and cases of other nature after the judgment dated December 16, 2009, in the case of Dr Mubashir Hassan & Roedad Khan and directed for collection of list of cases in which, parties benefited due to promulgation of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and directed the MIT, High Court of Sindh for collection of such details and examination of the orders passed by review boards/courts.

He stressed upon better accommodation and provision of full facilities for housing the courts and appointment of regular prosecutors so that the cases should not hamper and be disposed -of expeditiously.
