HEALTH IS WEALTH, INDEED

For people still struggling to make time for exercise, a new study offers a strong incentive: You’ll save $2,500, or Rs 1,66,000, a year. The savings, a result of reduced medical costs, don’t require much effort to accrue — just 30 minutes of walking five days a week is enough.

The findings come from an analysis of 26,239 men and women, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Researchers decided to see if they could determine what being active or inactive costs each of us annually in healthcare spending.

A study published in the Lancet in July put the costs of inactivity to the world economy at almost $68 billion annually.

For the new study, researchers stratified people into two broad groups: those who did or did not meet national exercise guidelines, which recommend that someone work out moderately for 30 minutes five times a week.

It turned out that, on average, someone who met the exercise guidelines paid $2,500 less in annual healthcare expenses related to heart disease than someone who did not meet the norms.

Actually it should read Brisk walking.
30-40 minutes of brisk walking (especially if one can do it in early morning) is an amazing cardio workout.
perhaps all that is required is a good quality padded shoes. really helps!

I do 3.6 miles (1.2 mile circuits around my park) every day taking average 70 minutes. My average has dropped over last three years. I used to clock in just under 60 minutes but my system is has gone through some shocks that have done damage. To keep within these time frames I have to walk at brisk pace - any faster you break out into jog.

On the weekend I do 4-5 circuits clocking in average 5 miles. I would highly recommend this to all. Find a hour during the day and keep to it in rain, sun or snow. Buy decent trainers or you will end up with corns and blisters.

Begin slowly then as you warm up floor the pedal. To the tail end slow down gradually. Buy a heart rate monitors and stay within your ideal band which will change as you get fitter. Unfortunately I have to take some Ramipril tablets but despite that thanks to my lifetime habit of jogging/walking I still lead very active life.

Oh don't smoke please - I was told to not do it. I paid no heed. Now I regret it badly ...

Thanks for the tag.

I don't have the patience nor the time for long walks. Instead I prefer doing certain mild exercises. If possible I will join swimming soon. (Never learnt it coz I'm aquaphobic and acrophobic too).

Dont you worry, swimming is much easier then its thought off, in one or two days the fear will fly away once you are into pool. And once you start loving it there is lots of fun with so many different styles and freedom of floating in water.
Just be watch full of those chlorine based open pools they tan the skin and dry hairs making them go grey/silver/white

Sometime back I tried swimming at a private pool at my Tayaji's house. With some assistance I managed to float.
I Hv been thinking about it since last 2yrs. Have not mustered the courage yet. Lol
I hope I do.

Take the step, you will cherish it entire life.
Once you learn how to float your body on water, you will feel a different living experience. The weightlessness in water helps you to enjoy so many tricks with such a ease that it feels like you are in space :D

Go out to some good local health club where swimming classes are conducted or instructors are there. Fill up the form, get the swimsuit, googles, cap and jump into water :)

Swimming is great way to stay fit. I can't anymore because I have developed allergy to chlorine and that triggers eczema.

I still remember my first swimming lesson as 5 year old in my first week at school - terrified but teachers slapped the belts on us. Swimming was mandatory in those days - probably legacy of Britannia rules the waves.

Go learn to swim. What with all those beaches in Dubai .... And then send us some cheeky snaps.

I realised that swimming is a good all round activity. My cousin did make me practise exhaling underwater. But I still feel I have yet to get comfortable with water.
Interestingly I'm fine with water theme parks.
Okay...I have gotta do this....atleast this year. Jai Hanuman!

Yeah.
There are times when I wonder what would I do if my flight crash landed on water? :P

Oh my god!
Kids that small should not be subjected to such harsh punishments.

Hope you're taking good care of your health.

phew!! ...since my healthcare costs (above my required minimum insurance premiums) aren't anywhere near $2500 (more like almost $0) I guess I can opt out without feeling guilty.

You could probably easily save $500+ a year just by sitting on the couch 20 minutes/week watching tv and clipping supermarket coupons.

Yes,it was the same in the Netherlands,it was free but it has changed now,the parents have to send the kids to swimming lessons and pay for it.
