BANGALORE: The mysterious death of 26 inmates of a beggars home in the last five days has shocked residents and put the government on the defensive in a city that many consider the face of new India.
A sharp letter from Karnataka governor H R Bhardwaj pushed chief minister B S Yeddyurappa into shunting out the states social welfare minister D Sudhakar. Three of the deaths were reported on Saturday. The minister had dubbed the deaths as "coincidence" and said his government merely released funds to the beggars home and could not be held responsible for what happened there.
Food poisoning was initially thought to be the cause but on Saturday, the centres doctor G Harimurthy said tests had confirmed gastroenteritis. The governor said that Karnataka was trying to project its achievements, the neglect and lack of appropriate response had shaken every civilized person.
