RAW tips off ISI on jehadi plot to assassinate Musharraf - Economic Times
NEW DELHI: The growing co-ordination between India's external intelligence agency, RAW, and Pakistan's ISI helped foil an assassination attempt on president Pervez Musharraf.
Sources in the Indian security establishment today disclosed that an intelligence intercept by RAW early this month had revealed a jehadi plot to assassinate the Pakistani president. This was promptly passed on by RAW chief C D Sahay to the ISI to help it to take pre-emptive steps.
It may be recalled that Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, before returning from the Saarc summit, had told president Musharraf to "take care." By tipping of the ISI on the plot, Mr Vajpayee has proved his sincerity. Both the intelligence agencies have been collaborating for the past four months and the latest exchange indicate an upgradation of intelligence ties and growing sensitivity in Pakistan about jehadi terror.
The ISI has been under pressure from the president for getting after jehadi terrorists. It may be recalled that there were reports that pressure from India and the US as well as the scrutiny of the rest of the world has been prompting the general to order closure of the ISI wing that deals exclusively with terrorist groups. There were also indications that Islamabad will be shutting the tap on outlawed terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish which have been active in Kashmir.
President Musharraf has increasingly become a target for Islamic militant groups since he turned against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and sided with the United States after 9/11 attacks .
